I am encountering the same thing on my phone. I know nothing for certain, but personally I have noticed a correlation between reception issues and the phone getting stuck in battery-drain mode when on standby. For example, if I fall asleep with my phone nearby, there is a small chance that it will drain overnight, but if I wake up and I am positioned on top of my phone, then the chance that it drained overnight seems to increase dramatically.
Additionally, the two places that trigger the battery drain for me are my bedroom and my job, both of which have poor reception.
The temporary fix that I have been using is downgrading from LTE to HSPA+. Also, occasionally, when I am home, I will put the phone in airplane mode and connect via WiFi. The downside of this is that I can't receive calls/texts to my carrier #, but I use a Google Voice # anyways so it doesn't really matter.
