Root kernel discussion for nexus 5

hmm i do not have the kernel but i have read around 250+ pages from franco's thread. i read somewhere there that the freq 3.01 Ghz the the app shows is not the clockspeed the phone is running but the highest it is allowed to run. i could be totally wrong and someone may set me straight. in my opinion very very few n5 can handle that kind of overclock.

Basically, I use the settings in post #12, which means I am underclocked and under-volted. Admittedly, I am not a gamer, but nothing I am using shows any lack of response or lag from these settings. (I use the DU kernel settings, but they are the same in the FKU app).

When first playing around with settings, you may want to not set them to apply on boot and make sure you don't get a spontaneous reboot or you'll end up in a bootloop.

on my quest to read up about different kernels in xda i stumbled onto a somewhat detailed tutorial about fastboot. did not have so much fun reading for a while. hope its ok to post a link,
[Guide] How To Setup And Use Fastboot - xda-developers

That's a good guide to teach you the basics of fastboot.

Fastboot is a powerful tool. It will save your butt more times than you'd think. With that said, just be careful, you can do some real damage with fastboot, including one of the only surefire ways to brick a nexus.

(Note-its safe most of the time, but irreversible damage can be done with a certain command)

That is a good fastboot guide.
I don't know why, but I do really enjoy using fastboot, adb/adb shell, and terminal emulator tools and utilities.
Must be something about performing commands and the satisfaction of feeling like I accomplished something. Not to knock root kits and tool boxes because the dev's of them are amazing and they can be beneficial, but I like to learn and perform the task and commands myself for a better understanding of what is actually happening.... Maybe I'm just a dork lol :D

Looks like a very good guide. I may finally learn some fastboot. I love what I end up being able to learn on these forums. I've picked up a lot, but there are all kinds of holes in my knowledge because it is the case that I often learn how to do something without always knowing why it works. Also, if I find something that works (WUGs) I tend to keep using it. ;)

However, as people post and others answer their questions I often learn a lot more and will try things out. This forum is actually quite wonderful in the fact that most folks here are both helpful and tolerant of those who know less. It's rare. In it's heyday, Brighthand was like that for Palm users. This place is the closest I've found to such a helpful community and I'm grateful. :)

I think you have it totally right! I changed the clock speed to 1497 and it still reads it is 3.01 but shows the CPU usage at 1497. After doing this it must be as you say. 3.01 is the fastest it can go but does not indicate the actual speed.
Having said that, my stability issues must be because I have "dirty" flashed so many times. When I do get some time I plan on cleaning things up and doing a total flash...CLEAN :)

Battery life today:
4 hours screen on time (autobrightness)
1.25 hours talk time
2 hours streaming podcasts
1 hour google play music

Not great, but not terrible either. 12 hours total seems low for me, but it was probably all that talking.
