(KERNEL) DRAndroid Kernel v1.1 * OVERCLOCKED [UPDATED 04/15/2013]

Dracable

Android Enthusiast
Alrighty folks! Here is DRAndroid Kernel v1.1! Has substantial improvments over v1.0. The default speed is changed in this kernel to 600mhz, so you have the option of overclocking, or just leaving the cpu alone. I removed some of the higher, less stable frequencies from v1.0. This kernel tops out at 787mhz, but it seems all around more stable than v1.0! Voltage settings have been adjusted, which has caused dramatic improvments in performance over the last revision! Kernel should be stable at 787mhz! This kernel beats the pants off the last kernel in benchmark tests! Also, the camera in this kernel WILL now work, but only at non-overclocked frequencies. So, if you need to use your camera, make sure your cpu frequency is set no higher than the 600mhz mark while using it, and when you are done, go ahead and crank that speed back up! ;-) i am still in testing with more frequencies and voltages, so this kernel is in no way a finished project! so, keep your eyes open for new releases as i spend more time trying to perfect the coding!

Note: Overclocking can cause serious and permanent damage to your phone if used improperly! please do ur research and use at your own risk! im not responsible for any damage that may occur from using my kernel!

if you are a rom developer and would like to use this kernel in a publically-released ROM, please ask permission and credit me in the release. Enjoy folks!!

and just so u folks know, my rom "DRAndroid" will be released soon with this kernel built into it. so if you arent comfortable with flashing this zImage, stay tuned for the rom!

I think I am going to cry....
THIS DAY JUST GETS BETTER AND BETTTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
is it alright I include in my rom Hello Venture?

First and foremost, thanks awesome work!!!

Ok, now questions...
source? did you borrow code? citations?
Any more improvements comming? cpu schedulers would be nice for one?

your awesome drac...

Ohh one more request if possible to implement...superior battery charging....Everyone know the battery life of this phone sucks.

i eventually plan on releasing the source. i did borrow some code from a fellow msm7x27 board, but mostly just for the clocking freqs/voltages. the rest was just piecing together the research ive done. i also added the interactive governer to the lineup, as that seemed like the most popular governer, from what ive seen. i might end up ditching the freqs i borrowed tho, im not sure yet. i need to do more testing to see if i can at least get us to that 800 mark smoothly. u need to bare with me here tho, as im new to all of this, so i AM still in the learning stage. there will be improvments as my knowledge on the subject increases. as far as superior battery charging, im not familiar with it. im not sure how to implement it into the kernel. if u have any good reading for me on the subject, send me a link and ill see what i can do about getting that into the kernel for u. great to hear ur enjoying it tho!

is there a guide on flashing a custom kernel available? maybe post a link in this thread?
i know you said, adb...which im fine with, i just need some sort of instructions.

actually, i think our system is different. i tried the "fastboot flash zimage zImage" command, but apparently it says we dont have a zImage partition. my workaround was to dump my boot.img from my phone, unpack it in dsixdas kitchen, replace the zImage, and repack. which rom do u wanna use my kernel with?

the new ICS v2.0 pllllleeeaaassseee!!!
okay, so i have the rom i want combined with the oc kernel unpacked with dex's kitchen, but i hjave no idea where to find this zimage fine i replace...this is making me feel dumb

3rd update....i found it, just wasnt looking hard enough...lets hope me flashing this works.

don't feel dumb at least your one of the people that are willing to learn instead like somepeople aka my friends XD

hehe, good job buddy! fyi, the boot-extracted folder is the same place where u can change ur "hello" screen if u want to. check out my png-2-rle tool! ;-)

well, it was more of a success then i expected...it flashed fine, but the start-up is all wonky. hangs at hello half the time.

*!!!UPDATED 04/15/2013!!!*

Hey everyone! Significant improvments on this kernel release! As opposed to the last release, when you flash this kernel, the default speed will be set to 600mhz, and will leave the option of overclocking up to you. I have tested, and the camera IS NOW WORKING as long as you keep the speed at 600mhz. If you overclock above 600mhz, the camera will force close. So, if you overclock, just turn your cpu speed back down to 600mhz while you use the camera. This is just a temporary fix until i get the coding perfected, but i felt that this kernel had enough improvement over the previous version to release it publicly. I have removed some of the higher frequencies that i have found unstable. This kernel tops out at 787mhz, but i have done extensive benchmarking on this kernel, and it seems a whole lot more stable, even up to the 787mhz mark. I have gotten the voltages fixed to where this kernel will outperform the previous version SIGNIFICANTLY! The overclock frequencies in the previous version were off by quite a bit. You will see a LOT of improvment in speed with this bad boy!

As always, please post feedback and any unknown bugs that you may find! This forum contains just the zImage of the kernel. If you would prefer, you can flash my DRAndroid Lite ROM with the overclocked kernel included (which i am also updating with this new kernel). Enjoy folks!!

so, i have been doing more research on overclocking, specifically issues with the cameras. i have found a few different sources that mention the camera not working at most overclocked speeds. most of the sources suggest that the issue is not able to be resolved, and the only fix is the temporary one that i mentioned (turning speeds down to 600mhz to use the camera). they also suggested that the bug could vary from phone to phone. so, there is a chance that some of you using my kernel MAY be able to use the camera while overclocked, while some of us may NOT be able to. i am still going to play around some more and see if i cant figure out some sort of workaround to get by this bug, but so far, i havent heard of any solutions in the research i have done. so, there IS a chance that this may be a permanent quirk with my kernel. :-( oh well. if it is permanent, at least the kernel is now stable enough to where u can turn the freq down to 600mhz to use the camera! :-) also, i havent done a ton of research on it yet, but i AM going to look into including the smartass governer in the kernel. ive heard a LOT of good about it, and i remember one of u guys asking me about it too. so, thats another addition u should see in the future! if any of you have any more suggestions about things u would like to see added, please feel free to ask, and ill do my best to research and determine if it would be a good addition! good luck folks, and happy OC'ing!!!

so, i have seen a bunch of info suggesting that overclock success can vary greatly from phone to phone. some of u may be able to hit over the 800mhz mark, some of u may not even be able to get to the 787mhz mark and still run stable. some of you may be able to use the camera at higher freqs, some may crash after 600mhz. my point is that you all can try your own testing and see what your specific Venture is capable of. also, since overclocking success varies so greatly, i am going to compile a 3rd revision of the kernel with a few extra OC freqs tacked on, so you can try pushing your Venture a little further if u desire to. if you push the phone too far, it will freeze up. so, if that happens, just pull the battery and boot your phone back up again. i personally havent had any luck yet, but if any of you have success hitting over the 800mhz mark, please share your success with us! any info/feedback is great, and more than welcomed! every piece of feedback gives me more info on how to improve the kernel for you guys! ;-) i will be compiling the 3rd revision either tonight or tomorrow, so keep your eyes open for the update!
