Keyboard/ auto correct options for a new user?

Hey Guys, I am TRYING to get more familiar with my Galaxy sIII but am finding auto correct or lack of correct slowing me down. On my iPhone I am able to quickly send out texts & when needed Auto Correct helps but on the Galaxy it seems to be getting in the way.

Anyone else have similar issues, I think I just have a setting OFF that may need to be on or I am over looking something. any thoughts?

example. I just typed out the above 1st sentence on my Galaxy "Hey guys, I am trying to get... and typed tyying, what do I need to do for it to correct tyying with trying?

Try using a different Keyboard than the stock one, like SwiftKey, it's even on sale today

I tried the swiftkey trial and found similar issues, after space space it didn't insert a Period but suggestions for 2 more words automatically?
