Help Keyboard backspaces symbols?

I have noticed while typing on my X, if I use a symbol such as $ or even "....it will backspace that symbol and put it 1 character away from where I actually want it. It will only do this once per text however, and once I backspace twice and then space ahead and put it where it needs to be, it actually stays there, i have tested this in various droids in verizon stores and it always does the same thing, is there a reason this does this, or is it a bug?

I'm sure you've notied that it does that for other, legitimate punctuation symbols as well? My guess is that it sees all symbols as punctuation, until the feature is switched off by backspacing. I actually like that it does that, but I don't type many non-punctuation symbols.
