Am I the only one thinking that Chromebooks (the low-end versions) would've been a MUCH better way to go? They'd have real keyboards, they'd cost a fraction of the iPads, and they'd have the power, flexibility--and SECURITY--of Linux, plus tons of open source software. :dontknow:

The middle school that I worked at last year had already started purchasing Chromebooks(on a small scale, not for distribution to students). I think it has serious potential.

Of course, then they had to complicate the platform mix by giving the teachers iPads.

Now that shows a lack of forethought before doing something. That is something that many school boards or any other governmental organizations are known for..

These people were raised on brand names. If it's open source and not traded as a stock, it's no good. I heard that from the Vulcan. He did ask how linux could be any good if it was open source.

Most exec types have used Windows exclusively. MS Office only is taught for business students. Any kind of art/design class would use Apple. To get people to investigate anything outside the box, you will have to wait for the next generation, and then it will be Android/Apple. Deja vu all over again.

The meeting was proposed by board member Monica Ratliff, who chairs a district committee that is overseeing technology in L.A. Unified, including major elements of the $1-billion iPad project.

My bank's website works perfectly using Google Chrome, updated versions of IE, and Firefox. But when it comes to Safari, good luck. My bank's website does not work at all with Safari.

Presumably because those are the most popular browsers in general use, what the majority of their customers might be using. These days a bank can't really say you must use IE, because that would immediately cut-off all their customers with Macs. I have a Mac, but I rarely use Safari, usually Firefox.

Banks should at least support Firefox or Chrome these days, given their apparent popularity. There's no excuse for them not to. If I ever came across a financial institution insisting that I use Internet Exploder and nothing else, I wouldn't be to happy about investing money with them. Even in this country, formerly a bastion of Win XP and IE6... All the major banks now support at least Firefox and Chrome, regardless of OS. Firefox is a well known brand name now, and is open source.

But I also use FX on Ubuntu! And you can get the complaint since you use FX ESR, which I do. That usually stays on the same version far longer than the normal updated crap. ESR just went from 17 to 24. There's other numbers attached to the versions but I forget them.

I use Firefox on Linux(Linux Mint) as well, and on a Mac. I'm using 24.0, which is the current release. I've not used extended support releases of Firefox. Banks for me as of lately not given any problem, i.e. insisting on IE nonsense, unsupported browser crap, even in China. (Bank of Communications, China Construction Bank and ICBC)...I wouldn't really expect them to support Safari, Opera, Sleipnir..or other minority browsers....but they should support current versions of Chrome as well, regardless of OS, including Android.

Mind me asking Zuben, why are you using the ESR versions of Firefox, any particular reason? If a bank says "Sorry we don't support older versions of Firefox."...there's not a lot you can do about that, apart from probably upgrading to a later version.

My sister works as a librarian at the elementary school we both went to, she was surprised to find out that they have ipads that the teachers reserve for certain projects.
These ipads do not leave the school, and they are closely monitored. The only time a student can have its hands on one is when there are teachers observing their students.

I am all for teaching kids technology at a young age, its not something that you should shelter them from until they turn a certain age. But I also believe we should not forget the importance of the paper back books, and physical interaction between students and teachers.

Maybe instead of ipads they could have gone with something that has less features. If they were using them to replace books, why not just use a tablet that only has the function of being able to be a book?

There is a high school being built not to far from me, their plan is for the library to have no physical books, and just lend out ipads to students.. we will see how that works out

Since it's made for enterprise, they seem to leave out a lot of the social bull and other crap. I don't care if the thing has transparent tabs, rounded corners, get to FB with one click. I happen to find the appearance of the old Netscape or Eudora good enough. I feel the browser is only a transport medium rather than a separate entity.

I enable javascript site by site, and usually enabling one bit fixes the problem. Once I enable the site, we are fine. I really see no reason why Twitter and Facebook have to have their paws in everything. They have a tracking cookie of some kind almost everywhere. I'm simply rebelling against the premise that everyone in the world has the right to know everything about you. I don't care what a movie star tweeted so why should anyone care if I don't?

That's why I said, that if the school was handing out Ipads, the kid's would only be allowed for schoolwork and turned off when done. I'd buy her one to play with. Would probably get some flack since they couldn't track location beyond house and school if the school issued one is not allowed out of the house except for school. Since she would be over a friend's house with her personal device, it's none of the school's business.
