Help Kies doesnt seem to connect to my phone

Okay I have just installed the new version of Kies on my laptop but when I try to connect my phone it just comes up in the bar on the left as a connected device but I access it, clicking on it does nothing. I have tried connecting with USB but then I just get an error message saying something about PC Studio whatever that is, I have been looking forward to the ICS update for months but now I cant get it because of this, Kies air works fine but its useless
