Help Kies - Serial number invalid for firmware upgrade and initialization

rel55

Lurker
When I view my Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch (Sprint/US) within Kies, it says "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies."

I go to "Firmware upgrade and initialization" and it tells me that "'SPH-D710' does not support initializing." What the hell does that mean?

When I go to "Firmware upgrade and initialization" after UNPLUGGING the device, it asks me to enter my model (SPH-D710) and serial number (MEID HEX) which I do. Interestingly, another error is fed: "The serial number you have entered is not valid. Please check and re-enter."

BTW, if you're wondering where the hell the serial number is on your GS2, it's the MEID HEX number which can be found under your phone's "About" settings, or on the 3rd bar code from the bottom on the box your phone came in. You can also find it on the phone itself by removing the battery and reading the sticker underneath. It's a shame Samsung couldn't just call the damn bar code "S/N" or "Serial number". This MEID-HEX crap is sort of a joke. Some people say only the number is the ID, but others say it needs to be preceded with HEX. For instance: HEXA000002xxxxxxx

Regardless, I can't get Kies to accept any variant of my model and s/n.

My Kies was working until I installed the latest version of Java...I loved Kies because when i want to access and move a large amount of photos to my desktop and external drive it lets me view the actual photos, so i can pick and choose the rt ones (some I keep on phone)
Any other ways to view the files, when i connect to PC via USB it shows folders and file names but the thumbnails do not come up

Based off your post you cannot use Kies at all. If that's the case, you have a totally different issue than mine and should create a new thread.

I always took this to mean that since the S2 didn't have a current Sprint software update available for Kies download, it just states that the device does not support it. All updates so far have used an over-the-air update process and not Kies. I figured that once there was a software update that used Kies, then the Kies software would support the upgrade.

This theory of mine is somewhat supported by the fact that T-Mobile is using the Kies software (USB connect) to update to Ice Cream Sandwich. Perhaps in the very near future, Kies will support Sprint software upgrades through Kies.

Thanks for the response. In reality it sounds like any US Sprint users will receive this error. Apparently not too many US members have tried clicking on "Firmware upgrade and initialization". From the sound of it, EVERYONE should be getting this error.

Up until now, when Sprint E4GT users got a software or firmware update, they got it OTA, not with Kies. But if T-Mobile is using Kies to update to ICS, then maybe this will change.

I remember reading somewhere that the Kies software for Windows was created for the original Galaxy S2, the European version with the button in the middle. That is the Galaxy S2 i9100. Most Kies features work with the other various GS2 versions, but not updating the software or firmware, so that feature was disabled for the US versions. I also read that before this was disabled, some people with US GS2 phones had bricked their phones attempting this.

BTW, Kies Air works great if you have a fast wi-fi connection for your phone. Not so great if your wi-fi is weak or slow. You can get it at the Android Market/Google Play. You don't need to install any software on your computer, all you need is your browser, but you do need to be on the same network as your wi-fi connected phone.
