Help Kies wants to perform a firmware update.

Hello, I'm a new user. I bought my SGS 2 weeks ago and it came with Froyo 2.2 installed. When I open Kies, I get a message informing that there is a firmware update available.

My firmware version: PDA: JPO / PHONE: JPP / CSC: JPO
Most recent firmware version: PDA: JPY / PHONE: JPY / CSC: JPY

Is this an update for Froyo 2.2.1? Or is it something else? Would you recommend to perform this update?

Sorry for so many questions, inexperienced user here. Thanks in advance!

Yes it is the update to Froyo 2.2.1. I've been on it for about a month now and it's the best firmware by a mile.
 
I'm in the same boat as you mate, literally bought my Galaxy S about 2 weeks ago. Got the update news, installed via Kies and it is indeed 2.2.1. And yes, its better, much smoother, apps load quiker and it doesn't seem to struggle as much when alot of ram (200mb +) is being used. All in all seems like an excellent upgrade.

One final thing to mention is that if you are gonna update, bear in mind that although the majority of your music, video etc. files will remain intact on the phone, all your home screens will be reset, your contacts will be wiped as will notes and reminders etc. Strangely enough your sms's should remain intact.

Good tip... sounds logical as it is like installing a new OS in a computer.
If I save my contacts in Kies I'll be able to retrieve them?
And what about the applications I have installed?
 
Just re-download your apps from the market whether paid or free.

Your contacts can also be backed up to your google account. So if you ever do a factory reset, the phone will sync with google and all your contacts will be back on your phone.

One final question (maybe silly, sorry, so new on this), how do I export my contacts to my Google Gmail account?

During the first set up of the phone, you would have been prompted to set up a Google Gmail account and password, some people don't bother doing this.

So assuming you have a google account, which will be something like:
someone@gmail.com
Tap on menu>settings>accounts and sync> put ticks in background data, auto sync.
Below these 2 is manage accounts, it should have a big G with your Gmail email account, tap on it and put ticks in sync contacts, sync Gmail and sync calender.
Tap the menu button, and then sync now.

You can also get access to your gmail account from your PC. Just go to google and sign in with your Gmail email account and password.
Once signed in you can edit your contacts, add new contacts, so when the phone next sync's they will be on your phone

Well, the strange thing is... that I have set up my Gmail account from the first moment I started used the phone... it is a brand new account that I registered only to use the phone... so everything is setup properly, but the contact list in Gmail is empty... any ideas? :confused:

How do you have contacts displayed on the phone, there are 3 options:
Phone, sim and google.
To find out do this:
Tap on the contacts icon>menu>more>display options>choose contacts to display, phone, sim, google.
In mine I had all checked in phone and in google, but once it had synced I took all the ticks out of phone, so now it just uses google.

You may have to keep doing a manual sync until it syncs on it's own.

If you contacts are on the sim, you will need to import them to phone/google
When you have done that delete them from the sim other wise you will end up with double contact entries

My SGS is configured just like that... all the contacts are there... even my Facebook contacts... but when I go into the Gmail website, the address book online is empty.

Maybe it is that I can not import contacts from the SGS to Gmail online...

Yes you can, and it's meant to do that. I have mine set up to do just that. It might be a problem with the google servers.
I know mine took quite some time to sync with google but once it had everything showed up ontline. Do a manual sync a few times to see if you can force it. then reboot the phone and try another manual sync.
 
This update is A MUST!!! 2.2.1 JPY is the best firmware ever. No lag!!(I have over 80apps installed), no lagfix needed. And GPS is working like is should be! And how the Galaxy S series should've been from the start!!!

That's great news ! I have been reading everything I can find regarding the 2.2.1 upgrade and almost all reports have been very positive. Yours is quite encouraging also. The GPS fix is very good news. I want to do the upgrade but want to have all my 'ducks in a row' first.

So, I do have a few relevant questions for you.
1.) How did you do your upgrade? Kies? Odin?
2.) Any glitches encountered during the upgrade procedure?
3.) Are you in an already approved area (i.e.UK)?
If you are not in an approved area...did you do any reg edit first?

The reason I'm asking is because;
1.) User 'Beards' has strongly suggested using Odin and not Kies.
2.) I keep reading horror stories posted by users who have tried various versions of Kies.
3.) I'm in the Asia region and I purchased my SGS International version here in Asia. I'm now on Eclair 2.1 and my device is at DXJG4 (box stock). I haven't done any tweaks as yet such as rooting or lag fix, etc.
4.) I think this 2.2.1 firmware version is the way for me to go. I want my SGS to be all that it can be,...and should have been from the beginning. This looks like the way to go.

Any additional tips and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 
Well, finally I took the courage to perform the update... everything went perfectly well and 2.2.1 is definetely the best SO I've used so far.
