Killing native SMS-client

Have searched the forum, but not found a solution to this issue.

When using an alternative SMS-app like Handcent I can't find a way to kill the native client. Using HTC Desire Z with Froyo, but have experienced the same problem on HTC Hero and SonyEricsson xperia mini pro, so this is probably an android issue.

Notifications come both on Handcent and native client.

Is this possible to fix?

Open up the native SMS app then go into settings by hitting the menu button, then look for notifications and there should be options to turn it off.

Is there anyway to turn the native sms client off entirely instead of just turning off the notifications? So that messages aren't received through it at all and only through the third party (such as handcent)? I ask this because the text messages take up a lot of space on the phone and slow it down and are impossible to delete if they amass to too large of an amount on the native client.

quick answer.. NO

reason.. as I understand it....
the native SMS client... is the only working sms "system" on the phone. if you kill that.. you dont get any sms service. The 3rd party apps (like Handcent) are only front-end skins that give you better UI and functionality. They make the presentation of text better for your consumption. They do not actually send or receive the sms messages.

in other words... do not mess with the native sms programs!

No. Explained above. Remove the stock app and you lose messaging capability.

Text messages don't take up a lot of space. It takes a lot of text messages to add up to a significant amount of space. 1 character is (conveniently!) 1 byte.
