Kindle

^ Lol, I think so. I usually stop my registration point after the address pops up.

So another question for Kindle owners, do you need to have a 'full' (credit card/address) amazon account to use your kindle, or can you just load your own ebooks (converted with calibre) w/o bothering with amazon?

Yea you don't need anything. Though I would register cause the kindle email address is nice. If you email a book to the kindle email address it will convert it automatically to the correct format, the only thing it doesnt convert is epub

you can do all without creating an actual account (i think, i know for sure credit card isnt required)
 
For some reason mine didn't sync with my phone and kindle.... but now I have the kindle I just sent them auto to it :D

Just thought I'd post this RE: Kindle Accounts...

Okay, I made my kindle account when I downloaded the android app. Easy as pie, I was hoping for the free books and what not. I didn't set up a Credit card. Also, I wasn't able to download books (from Amazon). I set up my kindle with the same account. Still can't download books and whatnot (even free >.>), *but* I can now access a lot of extra settings.

When I first turned it on, I had one page of settings (no clock!!!), so I logged in and *wah-la* all the settings are there. I can change the clock! Winning!

just thought I'd share that for any other cheap kindle users out there.
 
Hey, I've got a question for all you Kindle users out there...
How often do you actually have to charge yours? I know I read something like 2 months w/o wireless on, are you guys getting that?

I'm going on week 2 and it's near 50% (I did have wireless on for a bit when I first got it - had to screw around with it ;) )

Also, how is everyone using "Sleep" mode and "Off"? I tend to power down overnight - with the eink is this pointless?

I personally dont see any point in powering off every night (that goes for all of my devices)

When I first got mine I wondered the same sort of thing. From what I gathered, it would take more power to reboot the device than you would lose leaving it in sleep mode.

I can leave it for weeks in sleep mode without making a visible dent in the battery, so long as WiFi is off. I can't even remember how you actually turn it off...

Ahh okay. Cool cool. I have been going back and forth over the past couple of days if I'm leaving it off or sleep. Good to know that sleep mode is the better choice. :)
 
Just thought I'd post one (likely last) update on the whole kindle / battery thing. Been using it in 'sleep' mode, just charged it for the second time today. And that first one was when it came out of the box. It's been over a month! I'm very impressed. Though, I did cut my reading short last night when I got the battery message.

1+ month, pretty damn nice. Full charge in 2.5 hrs. Very nice. If only we could see phone battery like that ;) :D

I charge mine weekly, no matter what the charge level. Batteries like it more when you charge them in smaller increments rather than larger charge cycles.

My battery usage depends on how much I read, really. If I am actively reading a book my Kindle goes probably about 2 weeks on a charge. Anything more than 24 hours is fine with me.
 
I can't say I've had this problem. I pick up the phone, flip a few pages, pick up the Kindle and it immediately asks me if I want to jump to the location from the phone. Same vice versa.
 
Well let me jump in with a few questions even though this is an old thread:

1) Wife wants a Kindle which model is recommended these days, is the Fire the one to go with, I also seen some 6" as Olbriar mentioned.

2) Has anyone rooted theirs, and if yes what are the advantages.

3) I don't have to get the eBooks from Amazon, I can load any eBook correct ??

4) Anything else I should know before I go out and buy her one, she doesn't care for a keyboard, but I definitely would want one with WiFi, any other input or recommendations.

5) If you are using WiFi, does it allow you to surf the net also ??
 
I'll take this one, but know that I'm no kindle expert and I have the old Kindle Keyboard model, so my answers will reflect that.

Personally, I'd go with a kindle that uses the e-ink. It's really a great thing to read. Also, the battery life is excellent. On average reading (by my standards) I was getting about a month per charge. That'd usually include between one and two books. When I was reading several books a month, my battery life wasn't as good. That's to be expected. From my understanding the screen change is what uses battery.

I looked into rooting mine (not sure if on this model it's called "rooting" but, basically the same thing IMO)... and I didn't. The only thing that I wanted to do was have the 'sleep' image be customized. Not a big deal really, so I didn't risk it. *shrug*

Well, kinda. On the Project Gutenberg you can find a bunch of old kindle books. And I believe that you can use Calibre to convert most formats into the kindle format (.mobi is what I use... I believe kindles accept a couple of other formats). I'm not sure how copyright protection mechanisms work with converting and all that though :eek:

I got the one that has 3g (att I believe), it's a bit more, but you have that option when away from wifi. I hardly use it, but I do sometimes. I would say it's probably worth it - that being said, I don't have wifi so it'd be the only way for *me* to use the internet on the kindle.

Technically, yes. It's not nearly as smooth as on a phone though. You get some odd things and it's a bit of a hassle on some sites.

I hope that'll help you out a bit. Again, all of my input is based on the Kindle Keyboard. I believe that the Kindle closest related to the one I have now is the Kindle Touch...

Don, if you're looking for anything other than an e-reader, I'd nix e-ink if you can handle reading on a backlit screen. I love my N7, and would choose it over the Fire as you can download from both the Play Store and the Kindle Store. Easy to root and mod, but with stock Jelly Bean, it's just great.
Amazon is supposedly announcing a new series of Fires soon, so if you're bent on one, I would wait.
If an e-ink device is just what you want, I think the Nook Simple Touch with Glow Light is one of the best out there. The Verge loved it:

Too be honest I don't care, it is for for her, I will never use this, get me to read a book it like making me eat Blue Cheese and everyone knows how I hate Blue Cheese, LOL So I want something that will be easy for her to use, and not complicated, I realize that she does not need 3G WiFi will be sufficient, so if anyone else has any other feedback or links to models I am all ears, thanks, she hates gadgets so has to be simple for her to use or she will not use it. ;)

If she really is just looking to read books, I'd stick with either the Nook or Kindle and not bother with a more costly tablet. Both of them are very intuitive so it shouldn't be as confusing to use as an N7. Never used a Fire, but I think with how limited it is in functionality, it would be pretty easy to use as well.
 
Thanks, I like to blabber away. In forums I don't worry so much for periods and question marks, lol Force of habit.

She reads mainly True Crime form the 70's 80's and 90's whichever will have the largest selection. I guess that they can all be converted so I assume it does not matter.
 
Hmm, I think Kindles have a harder time reformatting text (unless you're rooted) than Nooks. But yeah, check out each respective store to see what content is available.
 
K, she seems to be set on the Fire, and she has checked the Amazon store for her books and they seem to have many. I will have her try one for a week or so and then she can get a better feel.

I would definitely recommend one of the e-ink readers, such as the kindle touch. It is supposed to be for reading for long periods, and it reduces glare from screen reflections, and is less tiring on the eyes. You say she seems set on the Fire, but will a week be enough for her to realize the difference? She will probably think it is great but not know how much better the e-ink kindle would have been.

Ideally if you could take both kindles away for a week she would be able to know which one she prefers to read - and I would bet my money on the e-ink model.

I say if she wants a tablet, get her a tablet. No point in calling it a kindle if it's not e-ink - may as well get any tablet (Nexus 7?).

If she wants an e-reader for extended periods of reading, get an e-ink kindle.

EDIT: Forgot to mention. You can read the e-ink models in direct sunlight. They even benefit from it! How does the Fire compare to that?
