knowing if someone has read your text message

Is there a app so that if I send a text message via regular SMS (not through something like kik) that I can know the other person has read it. would kik do what I need?

I know that handcent has a message received confirmation setting buried somewhere in it's settings menu.... I am not sure about kik, I have never used it....

There is confirmation for text messages but it's not guaranteed to work across carriers. The carriers on both ends would need to support it.
