Lack of settings, notifications, contrast, etc grrrr

I'm loving my N7 form factor, it's so liberating to be able to pocket it and have my hands free. What I'm having a hard time is with how sparse and uncustomizable Android as an OS is, or what I am assuming its iteration on the N7.

For example, I can't find a way to turn off keyboard clicks, something incredibly annoying at night or in a quiet room. Notifications are not very customizable, from what I can see you can only choose a sound for ALL notifications so cannot differentiate an email from a text message.

I think the worst fault is not having any kind of night time, high contrast mode. iOS has this, even windows tablets have this.

I'd rather not root and install custom ROMs, but I'm wondering if this is the only way to get basic functionality out of my N7. Are there any custom ROM's for 4.2 yet which address any of this stuff?

You can set individual notifications within the email & messaging apps themselves. Most browsers or e-readers will have the high contrast settings you see within their own settings. I'm not sure about keyboard feedback off the top of my head. I'll check the next time I'm on my N7. Did you check the Accessibility Options?

EDIT: On my EVO (an AOSP'd Rom) its the 'Touch Tone' Setting within the Sound Settings Menu.

Thanks. I was able to find the keyboard clicks under the language and input category.

I can't find anything for contrast in most programs. Kindle app lets you have black background with white text which is nice, but I'd love to have that system wide. I did find an add on for Dolphin for night mode, but then I lose my firefox sync. A system wide high contrast mode would go a long way in night time use, sigh one can only hope.

I mean I don't see the purpose of it, but I know some people need or want something similar. I don't use the contrast inversion, except for my e-reader night mode at night, so I've never really paid attention to what has it. Maybe somebody with more knowledge of this subject will chime in.

I like dark backgrounds (day or night), so I try to find apps that have that option. I use k9 for mail, Quickpic for gallery, Taptu for RSS, Solid Explorer for file explorer, and dark backgrounds on my launcher (ss)... all have dark options.

Thanks for the list, I'll check those out.
