my samsung galaxy mini was a gift from my son in Italy , whom i assume changed the language for me , now i've had to reset (thanks to guidance from this site) BUT i now have a phone in italian. How do I change the language?

Well, you may have to do some translations from Italian, but it's:
From the home screen -> Settings - Language and Input - Language, and you can set it from there.
From the home screen -> Settings - Language and Input - Language, and you can set it from there.
Look for the square A icon in settings, it's about half way down, then select language is the top item in the menu.
