looking for a new laptop. it's going to be primarily used for gaming, but it'll will also need to be for work too, so I'm trying to avoid some of the super bulky gaming laptops. I am looking at this one ASUS N55SF-EH71 Notebook PC - Intel Core i7-2670QM 2.2GHz, 8GB DDR3, 750GB HDD, DVDRW, 2GB Nvidia GT 555M, 15.6 Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Black, 1-YR Warranty/1-YR Accidental Damage at TigerDirect.com it has the dedicated graphics, a 7200 RPM drive and a decent i7 ( although i feel a higher end i5 would be better) but it's also nicely sized so it wont take up my entire desk.

anyone have any recommendations other than this one? sadly my PC knowledge as taken a southward turn the past few years so I don;t know as much as I should.

Most "Gamers" will cringe at the thought of gaming on a laptop, however I like the idea. You are on the right track looking for dedicated graphics and high powered cores however the problem lies in the fact that the video cards are not that powerful and battery life is drained quickly.

Overall, putting a 1000 into a gaming desktop will result in WAY more performance with the cost of mobility. It also depends on the games you want to play. Minecraft and WoW will run fine on the laptop you had, however higher end games like call of duty or battlefield will dwindle in FPS.

I would check out some of the laptops on iBUYPOWER Gaming PC: Custom Gaming Computers and Laptops or CyberPower PC. - Custom Built Gaming PC and Gaming Laptops. Stay clear of Alien-wWare as it is way too expensive and look for deals on New Egg and Tiger Direct.

Being a truck driver, I don't have a desktop. Nor do I have a game console. I use my laptop for gaming. I use an Asus K52J. It has 4GB RAM, i7 quad core, dedicated graphics. COD MW3 runs ok on low settings. BF3 is very slow. Other games such as WoW run good on high settings. Costed $900 a little over a year ago. I don't know how my graphics card and the one in the laptop your looking at compare.

If you will be gaming on your laptop at home on the desk because you prefer a laptop, just get a desktop. They are more powerful and cheaper and upgradable.

If your away from home and want to game on your laptop because you don't have access to your desktop, consider what games you want to play and how often you'll be gone.

A laptop that will run BF3 smoothly may cost probably $1500 +. You may also want to consider a SSD for storage since they have no moving parts and load stuff much faster that HDDs. Keep in mind the better the laptop you buy now, the longer it will keep up with newer games. I should have bought a better gaming laptop, instead I chose to save some money, now it's already being outdated by games.

An i7 would have better power efficiency than an i5, and in general an i7 is better. That setup the OP mentioned would be able to play Skyrim on low or medium at decent framerates. Basically, anything sub $1000 won't do very well as a gaming unit, they'd play most new games at low to medium.
