Laptop won't recognize Micro SD

Why is it that my Dell laptop (Windows 7) suddenly will not recognize the Micro SD in my phone? I click on Computer in the start menu, see "Phone", but that's all I see. I open Windows Media Player, see that WMP recognizes the phone under devices, but does not recognize the SD. What gives?
I have been able to do this before, and easily.
BTW, I am connecting Android to PC using USB.

Can you see other folders while plugged into the pc? Have you done the usual restarts on the phone and pc? Are the drivers setup properly? Have you tried different usb ports on the pc? It's strange that this would happen out of the blue... Aside from the above recommendations, I'm lost.

I haven't tried different USB ports on the PC, but when I attempt to get available storage after clicking, "settings", it says, "Unavailable". Disturbing. I keep the micro SD in an adapter, then in turn in a small ziplock, stored in my wallet.
When I attempt to sync through Windows Media Player, the phone is recognized, but not yhe micro SD.

...I didn't have to mount/unmount when inserting/removing the SD. I will try re-mounting the card, after emailing info I want to save.
All this was fine at one time, and then, not.
