Hi there,
I'm visually impaired as well and would dearly love for there to be a means to do this, but I don't think there is, with the Hero.

I'm hearing rumors that it will be possible to increase font size in the next version of the OS (1.6 and/or 2.0), but I don't know that for sure. And we don't know when Hero will get the update. So I'm afraid we just have to suffer for now, my friend!

Welcome to the club. I dont have an HTC Hero but I bought a Samsung Instinct. It seems those of us that are able to fuction with colors and graphics still get left behind on font size choices. I am visually impared as well and my arch nemis is small print. . I mean, even if they could increase the font by a few points it would help. They should be able to give us some options. 
They have apps for so many things. Can they make a working app for SMS and Emails? It should not be hard.

I've had several Android phones now. But my one main complaint is the FONT SIZE!!! I have read multiple posts already asking for help on how to enlarge the font on their Android phones but it's either they will get no answer or get suggestions to use an app that doesn't work (or partially works).
I'm so frustrated that this function is not being given attention by the Android developers. BlackBerry and Iphone have the settings for font adjustment. If they can do it, why can't Android do the same? It's obviously not impossible because it's being done on other platforms. I'm starting to think Android doesn't give a crap to visually impaired users.
Well there are 2 very useful apps that I use that are indeed a great help!
1. Handcent SMS. This is free and font sizes on everything can be adjusted. This is the reason why I'm able to use my SMS without using a magnifying glass!
2. K-9 Mail. Pretty much the same description as Handcent SMS. But of course this one is for emails. And this is also the reason why I can use my phones email functionality without a magnifier.
I've been reading complaints on Android font size that date back to 2008. And I am surprised that up to now, nothing is being done about this.
Sure there can be an app to increase sms or email font size. You can also increase the browser's font size. But wouldn't it be a LOT more easier if the font setting can be set on a global scale? Not just per application?
When will the developers take notice of the visually impaired users' predicament? Are you not challenged at all that BB and Apple were able to do it and are implementing it on their products now?

I too am legally blind (impaired) and have been for several years now . It doesn't mean you can't see anything, but as PhoenixMoon said, small print is a nemesis. I put off getting an Android phone just because of that reason. I had a regular cell phone for several years earlier that allowed for voice dialing(thank goodness). But this is my second Android and the problem still persists. This one has a slightly larger screen, but that really does not help when you are visually impaired. I tried Big Fonts, but it doesn't work globally on the phone, so I uninstalled it. I have resorted to an Android Assistant to help in some areas, but I still need to see the phone to accomplish other tasks. I keep checking for someone to come out with an app to globally give bigger fonts for Android and it would be a much happier experience using the phone. I have had 25 surgeries on both eyes and they are better, but still can't see the phone without wearing a headband magnifier. My left eye was totally blind when this all started, but both eyes are just impaired now. I keep hoping.
