Help Large messages sent as MMS?

Not 100% sure about this but my wife swears blind that if she sends a large text message it gets sent as an MMS. Not cool because SMS are free on her contract but MMS are chargeable. On O2 in the UK.

Any truth in this?

She also uses the standard messaging app. Just wondered if this is true whether it can be changed using handspring or chompsms?

The standard messaging app automatically converts a SMS into MMS if it is longer than 3 messages. Unfortunately there is no way to change this.

However you can use Handcent SMS app to solve the problem. Using the app the message is sent as SMS only no matter how long it is.

What's the problem if it converts to MMS? This actually saves you money because it's cheaper to send 1 MMS than 3-4 SMS's.

Yep. A lot of contracts in the UK offer unlimited SMS but charge for each MMS.

So you dont really want to send one unless you need to.

Yes this is true that it sends it as an MMS after 3 messages. Not only that the number of characters allowed in my standard sms application seems to be about a third of what you get with handcent and also my previous phone. Very strange......
