Larger Phones

Hi guys,

I'm planning on moving from iOS to Android and I've noticed the phones I'm interested in (Xperia S, HTC One X, etc) are a bit bigger than the iPhone. Do you get used to the size difference and navigating with a larger screen fairly easily or do some of you still consider the phones too large?

I have noticed that the iPhone's small screen and large bezel does make the phone look a lot smaller than it actually is. Looking at the phones from the front, the Galaxy S2 looks much larger than the iPhone, but looking at them both from the back, the S2 only seems a little bit longer.

Thanks

I went from a D2 (which I believe is comparable in size to an iPhone) to the Galaxy Nexus (huge screen), and I was initially concerned as my hands aren't large. I had no trouble and totally enjoy it. Now when I pick up my D2 (my 4 yr old uses it for games on WiFi) I can't figure out for the life of me how I lived with such a small screen for 2+ years.

I hope this helps.

I used to have a 5800 before moving to Android (3.2inch screen). I got myself a Galaxy S variant (4inch screen). And like pupakt before, I find myself thinking how could I have been content with the smaller screen on my old phone.

Although I admit that some phones are pushing the boundaries of large (Rezound, Galaxy Nexus, etc), I find that around the neighborhood of 3.7-4.3 inches to be a nice perfect size for me.

You won't feel much of a difference in the actual handling of the Galaxy S2 and iPhone "physically" since the size difference of both devices aren't really that big (1cm), plus the S2 is thinner. However the best way you can check for yourself is to go to a store and play around with some of the units they have their. Or on your iphone, just see if you can reach around the bezel of the screen easily.

I went from a droid 2 (3.7) to a droid X (4.3). After configuring the X the way I wanted it, I went back to the droid 2 to make sure everything was the same and it felt like a toy.

Go to phone-size.com and you can do side-by-side comparisons of several models at a time, get size and weight specs etc.

My personal sweet spot is about 4"-4.3".

I went from a Nokia 5800xm (3.2inch) to a Xperia X10 (4.0inch) and 4months ago got a Galaxy S2 (4.3inch), the move from 3.2inch to 4.0 was huge but within a few weeks i was happy and very comfortable and i actualy felt that 4.0 wasnt quite big enough and got the GS2 and 4.3inch seems to be the sweet spot for me, and as said before these phones are so lite and thin that the size is managable.

Using an iPhone now feels odd, that huge bezel and small 3.5inch display is just awful IMO, i just cant stand using anything smaller than 4.0inch now.

That 3.5 inch screen is a main reason I don't own an iPhone. Using my iPod Touch online is pretty frustrating, so I don't do it often. I have the Galaxy S2, love the size. Text on websites is large enough that I don't have to zoom way in , links are big enough for my fingers to tap without hitting something else and movies are acceptable size.

Ditto when I went from the Moment to the Evo at 4.3".

OP, I predict that after a few days with the larger screen, you won't want to ever turn back.

I went from the HTC Hero that has a 3.2'' to the HTC EVO 4G 4.3''. I just can't see myself going back to something smaller ever.

I went from a 3.5" Android phone to a 4" Android phone and thought I would hate it. Now I can't go back to a 3.5" form factor. I briefly had a 4.3" phone and found I could live with it, but that is about as big as I feel comfortable dealing with. I wouldn't be surprised if the next iPhone has a bigger screen.

Thanks for all the advice. The thing that concerns me is that I've got fairly small hands. I've just dug out my awesome Nokia 3210 and that was about the same length as the phones I'm looking at and that never felt too large (at the time).

I suppose they just need getting used to and after a while they feel natural.

Went from an iphone4 to the galaxy s2 skyrocket which is 4.5 and at first it was weird... Now if I use my wife's iphone4 it feels like it's way to small
