It's a term used to describe non permanent workers who travel around carrying a mattress or something.

Lol the mattress is actually called swag (nope, not what you think it means)

Wherever you looked it up didn't describe too clearly. It's not a mattress, it's a bedroll, which consisted typically of a sheet of canvas and a blanket. Swagmen came about because of the great depression when there was little work to be found and blokes would 'go bush' looking for enough work to keep themselves fed, often working for food only.
