Root Last resort for a bricked, rooted, Asus Zenfone 2.

Fraxiom

Newbie
So I was trying to re-install the WeatherTime app on the ZenFone 2. I had removed it because it is bloatware but wanted it back for my lockscreen. I copied the .apk and the folder into system/app, changed the permissions to rw-r--r--, and restarted my phone.

Only, my phone would not get out of the bootscreen.

Tis is my first time stuck in a bootloop and honestly, I'm scared shitless for my new phone. I have wiped all user data and cache and still cannot access my phone. My PC does not recognize my ZenFone 2 as a device anymore. I'm running out of options and will not be able to get a new phone for a while so at this point I'm desperate. PLEASE give any tips you can! <3

What happens if you remove the APK and folder from /system again? Would that at least get your device to boot again?

That's the thing. My PC won't even recognize my phone as a phone. I can't manually install or remove any files without using ADB. My PC will recognize that the phoe is connected and try to launch the ASUS PC Suite, but nothing beyond that.

Had to ask since you're rooted. Some custom recoveries include a lightweight file manager, which could be used to remove the file/folders that are apparently causing problems.

I'm afraid I'm running out of device-agnostic ideas. :(

Apparently my phone is not technically bricked because I can get into recovery.

Just in case this happens again. Your computer won't recognize it in adb you would have to boot in fastboot. Just search how to do it in your device and how to control it from there.
Also install a custom recovery and learn how to use it to prevent this from happening again. :)

I have no idea what that means. I rooted because i thought it was like a jailbreak for iphone which i enjoyed a lot. I'm new to this android thing. Can you walk me through it?

I'll try to walk you through what I remember:

You need to know what model your phone is and download the stuff accordingly. Look at your ZenFone 2 box to see if it is right. (See pic)

Stage 1: ABSOLUTE PANIC

Oh my god what is happening

...Okay. Breathe in... Breathe out. You GOT this!

Stage 2: Downloads for days. Download all this to your PC. Try to save all this in one folder or...you're gonna have a bad time.

There are a few things that you are going to want to download.

1. The firmware. This is the OS of the device, what makes it run and boot normally. Download this and name it "firmware.zip." You don't have to do anything with this right away.

2. The boot, recovery, etc.

Ohhhh shiz. You're hackin' the mainframe. :mustachedroid:

These utilities will help your phone get back to it's old self. You can find them right here:

3. Drivers. EXTRACT AND INSTALL THESE.
I'm not talking private drivers that can take you all around the country. I'm talking drivers that will hopefully help you as you fumble around with your soft-bricked phone, ripping your hair out and thinking: "Why did I have to do that?"

...Also, these drivers are for Windows. If you're on Mac, I don't know what to tell you. Try googling versions of these things, or I can hook you up with some ZenFone communities.
