Last space shuttle launch...An era ends

I would think a lot of the low gravity scientific research must have been of great value. The space program also spurred on many technologies, many of which improved quality of life. We have been able to learn more about our universe, and specifically, our planet. I think research on things like the ozone layer and climate change would have been much more difficult without space exploration capability.

Any yet important people still argue the legitimacy of this ozone layer regarding climate change "nonesense".

Perhaps if these significances were more televised and explained, the average sentiment would be a little different. As of now, I think most people view space exploration as just playing around in space with dirt and rocks (certainly there is more to that, but perhaps not in the public eye).

I guess my point, which I didn't make clear, from the beginning is that we clearly don't have the funds. Something has to give, I'd rather it be the space program (probably temporarily) than medicare, school funding, etc.

That's a good point. However I don't think near enough resources go to R&D. The space program is part of that but only a part. I do agree with Obama's decisions largely on cutting NASAs operations which were basically going nowhere. I think governments need to focus on Research more, and if that requires extra taxes, so be it. It'll save money, the environment and lives in the future.

That's the problem. We already have a hole so damn big that we essentially need to increases taxes to make up for it. We can't even come up with a consensus on THAT and there are talks about raising the debt ceiling.
