Layers in android's version of Google Maps?

Any idea when an update to Google Maps might be happening?

Specifically I'm looking for the layers & My Maps functionality. Something I had in my Nokia N96 version before taking the plunge and upgrading to a HTC Hero. Seems I've taken a back step as currently these functions aren't available yet!
 
Are you talking about "My Map Editor" from google ?

If so there is an app out there. I have it on my phone and it works great.

Goto market and search "my maps editor".
 
When you say layers , Do you mean something like this? Scroll down and you will see Google Maps with Layers such as Wikipedia and My maps :)

There are a couple of Apps that may help (I'm quite new to this too).

One (which I love) is Layar

Another is an app called 'My Maps Editor'

Get them both from the Android market.

Thanks also. I already had Layar installed but 'My Maps Editor' seems to almost fit my requirements...Thanks!
