Wow, an i5 instead of an i7? Not that you'd notice much of a difference on everyday computing (in your case posting here lol :p ) but the fact that you pay for i7 performance, you'd better damn well get i7 performance. My i7 is an old school (shut it kid!) Q740. It doesn't do too bad on the Windows bench marking (6.8 index). What I like most about it is the dual HDs. I have 128 GB SSD and a 500 GB standard drive. Boot-up and shutdown times are great. I just wish this damn thing wasn't so heavy. I'm looking forward to being able to take my laptop around without having back pain later in the day.

There is not much difference except 250$ extra I am paying for  .Both models are same except for processor and RAM . (i5 is 4GB and i7 is 8GB) .
The processor wont make a difference for .
The 2nd gen i3 is in the league of older i5 so you wont have any problems

I'm going to use this laptop to commute. Excel spreadsheets for inventorying hardware, maybe logging into the local network and then possibly remote desktop support. On the rarest occasions, I'll use it for media, but this current laptop has a bluray player and 1080P so considering this other one is "ONLY" 1366x768 on the display, I may just use it for work and web surfing.

One thing I'm not looking forward to, I'm used to installing software via DVD-rom so I'll have to move some files onto a flashdrive in order to do certain installs.

I only upgraded to Windows Professional, to a backlit keyboard, and the upgraded wifi. I know there's not much difference in regular Windows and Windows Professional except how it logs into domains, but since I'll be using it mostly in a corporate environment within a certain domain, I'd rather stay within operating specs.

I figure an onboard video card is enough for what I need it. Now the laptop I'm on now, it has a dedicated video card, NVidia GeForce GTS 360M

The 14 in" display is really good even for "low" resolution .I have seen envy but didnt like the trackpad .The newer "beats" dm4's trackpad was really good .But they goofed up the Graphics Card .

later Gbiggie,

Yeah, an external optical drive is an option, but seems like more stuff to carry around. The last place I did IT consultation work for, the last guy had a 3.5 floppy external. I just laughed at the stuff he'd buy to support that job site.

I should've bought one of these and left it out just to freak out the next guy that supported that site. He would be like, "What the hell does THIS thing support? And how old is the freaking equipment out here?"

I'm glad I'm not there anymore. I joke about leaving old peripherals around, but what was already there had me scratching my head. I had to service a computer there once and found a dead roach laying on the motherboard. That place needed at least $100,000 in computer upgrades. They had some old Serial to USB adapters because their stuff was very old.

Why would anyone use a floppy drive !!
I know some companies have their older data backup in floppy drives .They never upgrade their data source .It does annoy auditors though

I've worked for some companies that still use digital tape backups. A few years ago I supported some Accounting software and it would amaze you to see (in my case hear) how many CPAs would use dial-up to transmit their clients' tax returns.

On side note ,I knew a guy who splurged 400 $ on a PCI graphics card (Voodoo I think ) and a Sata controller just because he like his proc-mobo two years back...

Not all new tech is necessarily better. Audio stuff is one example. As much as I hate admitting it, my parents and their generation is right about old Vinyl records sounding better than some of the digital stuff. There's more fidelity in those things since they didn't weed out all the audio spectrum that they thought was useless.

Older speakers also seem to sound better than the newer stuff. I have some old Sony speakers that sound better than some Klipsch speakers that I bought a few years ago.

I haven't had too much trouble with Acer. I have had problems with HP in the past, Dell has even given me problems. I haven't tried Lenovo yet but I haven't heard good things about them, same with Asus although I've seen some bad reviews on Newegg. The last 2 Acers I owned, they became obsolete before they even gave me any trouble. I wonder, I have a very old Pentium 75 in storage somewhere. I wonder if that thing will fire up.

A whole batch of ASUS had faulty screens recently so they have delivery problems in the newer ones .
Dell looks like clunk tanks ,toshibas weigh like tanks .....
The best thing about ASUS is I am not paying for the OS . I can run Linux Mint without having to fear of modifying the HDD .
