Does anyone know if there is a planned release of an android 5.0 update. Or is there a way to update. I am tired of the default look and want to change
 
Assuming you're on Straight Talk, don't bank on it. I've been on ST for several years and have had several of their phones – never once has an OS update come my way.
 
Can depend on the phone and where it originally came from. If you have a Nexus 5 from Google Play, or a Galaxy S4 from AT&T/Verizon you should get Lollipop, but if you have a low/mid range device from ST it's unlikely.
 
The only prepaid phones I've ever had that actually received upgrades from the carrier, all came from T-Mobile.
