Help "LG earphones with Button and Mic" use on "LG Volt" running Android KitKat?

I have the LG Volt running Kitkat. I have LG headphones from my one of my old LG Optimus phones and the mic works but there is a button on the earphones and I want to use the button to skip through music and other things. It seems like I can't. I want to know if anyone has a solution to make the button work for the phone or at least to be able to use the voice mate, that way I will be able to tell the phone what I want it to do through the mic.

When I press the button now it give me the phone app . I want it to open voice mate instead of opening the phone app. Is there anyway I can change the default app setting to Voice mate instead of the phone app,?

i think if you hold the button down, it'll open the 'voice command' app, compared to tapping where it'll open the phone app

Wow, I didn't even know you could use headphones with a mic with Android. I thought that was an "Apple Only" thing.

yep, if you plug in headphones with three rings on the 3.5 connector the status bar icon changes to a headphone icon with a mic on it, and the mic button will do different things based on what phone you have.

Just a note. Any aftermarket headphones work with android, but the headphones that came with my friends iPhone don't work in my phone for some reason. It's weird.

It's not weird, it's Apple. Proprietary headphones.

i was just about to post this as a new thread (and still may) but saw yours so i thought i'd reply here, first

you didn't mention which lg model you're using, but my lg hbs700 bluetooth headset is giving me inconsistencies that i hadn't had when using them with my last (total piece o' crap) kyocera rise, i.e., the transport buttons now only work on-and-off again and - strangely enough (since i believe the loudness, i.e., bass/treble boost, function is independent of the volt) - that function doesn't seem to work at all on the volt

however, everything seems to work perfectly fine between the headset and my macbook pro (running osx.8.5)

any of this applicable to your problem?
