Help LG earphones with Button and Mic" use on "LG Volt" running Android KitKat?

I have LG headphones from my one of my old LG Optimus phones and the mic works but there is a button on the earphones and I want to use the button to skip through music and other things. It seems like I can't. I want to know if anyone has a solution to make the button work for the phone or at least to be able to use the voice mate, that way I will be able to tell the phone what I want it to do through the mic.

When I press the button now it give me the phone app . I want it to open voice mate instead of opening the phone app. Is there anyway I can change the default app setting to Voice mate instead of the phone app?

There are button remapper apps that are free in the play store. That should solve your problems. If you wanted to use apple head sets your just poop out of luck. They use a proprietary setup.
