Help LG G2 Mobile Data gets disabled

So ive had the LG G2 for a couple weeks now and all i can say is that i love it to death.

My problem is that i finally got a slimport cable and everytime i plug it in my 4G connection completely turns off! Meaning i can not watch Netflix or use Google or anything else that requires a data connection. It happens randomly so its hit or miss but it defeats the entire reason that i bought the cable. Anyone else had this problem?

Whenever you plug into the LG (or pretty much any Android phone) it should ask what type of connection you are doing - charge only, ethernet, etc...
That being said I would believe that when you are plugging in the slimport cable that the phone is thinking you are connecting it as ethernet and so it shuts down 4g under the assumption that you are supplying an ethernet connection through the cable. When you plug in the cable you should get a popup on the screen or on the status bar drop down that will allow you to select what type of connection. You may have selected a wrong connection or set the phone where it always thinks that a certain connection is selected whenever you plug in. In the settings you can set it to always ask whenever it is plugged in.

Its whenever I connect the slimport cable. My phone will show up on the TV but my cell signal changes from being a 4g connection to searching for a network. Its like I was in a lead lined room.

If it is as you have said then how would I go about setting it up to work without turning my data off?

I have the T-Mobile version if that helps at all.

When you plug it in, it should show up in the notification bar. Drop it down and click on it. From there you can modify which type of connection you're trying to make. I'm not on a stock ROM and longer so I can't verify for ya. :o
BTW, welcome to the forums!

When I plug it in there is no status bar icon or pop up. I can change the connection in the settings menu but it doesn't pop up with anything. It simply displays my phone on the TV but disables my data. I've already set the USB to the charge only option but that doesn't change anything.

And thanks for the warm welcome

Oh boy. That sounds like it might be a bug. I wish I had one of these devices to check myself. I might have one laying around, and will look for it...

I'd give LG Support a call on that one. So they are supposed to support HDMI output via a mobility display port, but then, why would they disable the very connectivity that could be supplying the content? I think you are asking a very legit question.

Unless, the particular Slimport you have isn't fully compatible. That is a possibility.

Before you call LG support, try some more experimentation:

Go into Settings | PC Connection | Select USB Connection Method, and Try Media Sync, or try Internet Connection and Modem, or try Camera (PTP) (essentially, exhaustively try each option). And I know it's extra work but, each time you change the selection, make sure you disconnect the Slimport, wait for your 4G connectivity to return, and then reconnect the Slimport, and wait for connectivity to return if it is disabled momentarily. Sorry, hope you understand what I'm suggesting. It's possible the change doesn't take effect until the moment the phone senses the slimport is being attached.

BTW, the reason you aren't seeing a popup or message in the status bar may be because you don't have "Ask upon connecting" checked.

HTH, and another welcome.

Believe it or not I have already done what you have suggested. It seems to be something with the cable because it doesn't always happen right away. Plus I have managed to get my data back by covering the box end of the cable with my hand.

Could such a device be emitting a frequency that's at the same frequency that my phone is using effectively interfering with it? Its not powered on until I plug it in and when I unplug it my data comes back on after a couple of seconds.

I was only able to find an MHL adapter I used with a previous phone. MHL is not supported on the LG G2. One needs a SLIMPORT adapter. I'm just mentioning this for others reading the thread.

OK, question: when you plug it in, with HDMI cable to the Slimport and the TV or entertainment system (to TV), does the LG display come up on the TV?

If not, then probably either the Slimport is defective, or the microUSB in the phone is. :)

Yes, I could imagine the Slimport, with or without an attached HDMI cable, if defective, acting like an antenna, and swamping the signal the radio is attempting to remain locked onto.

Can you try another Slimport device?

Your phone supports Miracast I believe. Maybe you can wirelessly stream content in the interim.

Yes, my phone appears on the TV and works as should. I do not currently have another slimport device and I am sort of holding out on purchasing another for fear that its the phone and not the slimport cable.

If it happens to be acting like an antenna, how would I go about blocking the interference? I tried aluminum foil but that didn't really work.

I did actually purchase an mhl cable before the slimport because that's what a couple websites said it took (I didn't think to look on the back of the box) after returning the mhl and getting the slimport it worked until I realized I that my data was being disabled.

Actually I did manage to figure out that it is in fact a defective cable. I am able to use it without problems if it is laying in a certain position telling me that its a bad cable or it is incorrectly shielded...managed to watch a couple episodes of Breaking Bad and all was well.

Also in the video there is what appears to also be a no sim icon but I could be wrong but thanks for posting that anyways.

Never the less the problem is solved. Thank you all for your help :-)

ok so, the guy demoing the slimport with the LG just didn't have service nor a SIM card. funny.

sorry your cable defective. glad you narrowed down the issue.
