Android Question

Hello,
I have an LG Ignite (Model Number LG-AS855) (Android Version 2.3.4) My current carrier is with Element Mobile in Wisconsin. I have tried several times to perform a software update however every time I try, it says "Current version is the latest version." Under the "Update History" tab, it clearly states that it has not been updated.
I realize that there are many newer, nicer versions better than "Gingerbread" such as "Ice Cream Sandwich" (4.0-4.0.4) and even "Jellybean" (4.1-4.3)
I was wondering if there is any possibility if ANYONE can walk me through the possibilities of updating my LG Ignite.
I have read tons of forums, tried Samsung Kies, and asked my carrier. I believe by rooting my phone I could perhaps update the firmware, however I do not understand "rooting" too well (other than a broad overview of SuperOneClick and simple terms) and because of this am hesitant. If someone is willing to walk me through simply how to root and use the root to ONLY update my 2.3.4 version to something better that would be great!
Please help me!
Thank you,
