Help LG Optimus P-509

Help, I'm pretty phone stupid. I got the phone as a gift & had no idea it has or what a SD card is. Now I've sort of learned by accident ( can't really do it when I need to ) how to move stuff to it) how to move downloaded apps to it. Problem is, it's 2gb & to small. How do I know which is the correct one to buy & how big I need. I also have no idea how to move whatever I moved onto the current SD to a new one should/when I get it. HELP!
Thanks

Jrabbitskin, welcome to the forums! You've come to the right place!

We were all phone newbies at one time. After awhile here, you will learn to MASTER your Optimus T and any other Android device you may own in the future :)

You will want to spend some time here:

LG Optimus T - Android Forums

To help you with your issue: This phone is capable of supporting up to a 32GB micro-SD card. Get the highest CLASS number you can afford: the higher the class number, the faster the data transfer rate to and from the card. Class 10 would be great.

It's also important to make sure that apps with widgets stay on the phone, and not get moved to the card. They may have problems if that happens.

Anyway, it's great to have you aboard. If you have any other questions or issues, we're all here to help :)

Hello Jrabbitskin - Welcome to AF! :hello:

Looks like The Chief above me has you pointed in the right direction there, but if you need any help, just ask away.

Ok that's great but as my phone kept running out of space & asking what to do & I asked a tech in the field in my neighborhood. I moved stuff to the card when I figured out how to by accident. Now what? What's this "class" stuff you speak of? How do I know what card will work in my phone. I live overseas & my husband is stateside, I want to order it from Amazon while he's there, any help, links would be really appreciated.
Thanks

Here's the layout: It seems that you have a LG Optimus phone. You'll need a bigger SD card to have more space to install apps, pics, music, videos, etcetera. When you are buying an sd card, a class "A" type would be the best one to get (as stated above in post #2). Any other "class" sd card can work as well. Make sure to get one that is bigger in number than the one you already have. For example: 8GB - 16GB - 32GB - 64GB. Check the sd card to see what the number is... then replaced it with a larger one.

I hope this helps.

Thank you, I got that but I still don't really get what the class thing is? Is that just the size? II can move downloaded apps to it?
Thanks everyone

Class is the data transfer SPEED of the card. It has nothing to do with the size (or data capacity) of it, which is measured in Gigabytes. You have a 2 GB card in your phone, which is terribly small at 2 billion bytes of data. I would recommend a 16 GB card, which should be MORE than you will ever need - unless you plan to put a lot of movies on it. A 16 GB micro-SD card with Class 10 data transfer speed is less than $20 at Amazon:

Amazon.com: SanDisk Ultra 16 GB MicroSDHC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card with Adapter (SDSDQU-016G-AFFP-A): Computers & Accessories

I hope this helps :)

What's the difference between micro SD & micro SD HC. What do I need to make sure it says about it in order to make sure it will fit & is compatible with my fone?

Sorry chief I didn't see your reply & I asked another question & then there was no Thanks to click or I would have. You've been great.

No problem, Rabbit, just happy that you're getting something out of this.

Functionally, there is NO DIFFERENCE at all between SD and SDHC cards. The "HC" stands for "High Capacity" and means that the SDHC card can store more data than an SD card, which is limited to 4 GB. Anything from 8 GB to 32 GB is High Capacity, or SDHC.

Just for reference in the future, there is a new category coming out called SDXC, or eXtended Capacity, which starts at 32 GB and goes on up... to a theoretical limit of 2 TB, or terabytes!

Current smartphones pretty much cap out at the 64 GB SDHC cards, as they have some issues managing more memory than that. So your phone, with a 16 or 32 GB card, will be fine for the foreseeable future... but tomorrow's smartphones will easily cap out at 128 GB or more. You could put a LOT or movies, music and high-definition videos in that much memory.

I really have only downloaded games & never tried to move movies onto it or know where they go or not sure if I know how or where to find them & then watch them. Maybe that will be next. although I have put & read books on it so there might be hope. Maybe I'll try a movie soon too. Am I one of the lamest question asker?

Not at all, and I hope I'm not one of the lamest question answerers :p

Asking questions and answering questions is how we all teach and learn and get better with one another's help. THAT'S the whole reason this site exists. Android Forums isn't just a social gathering: it's a place to GROW together, and it's a privilege to be here helping. And you'll be an Android expert in no time.

When you're ready - with a larger microSD card - we'll tackle putting movies and music on there for your mobile enjoyment :)

Sorry Rush, I guess I should have done that awhile ago. We were kind of all over the place for the Introductions section, huh? Thank you :)

That's exactly the phone I have but I received it as a gift & I'm not using T-Mobile because I live overseas. When my hubby comes back from being stateside hopefully with a bigger SD card can you all teach me how to save somewhere what's on the current card & then put it onto the new one when I put it in? After I figure out which laptop battery I'm ordering him I will go ahead & order the one chief posted a link for. Thanks chief

Happy to help, Rabbit. IF it's okay to call you that :)

The micro-SD card will come with an adapter that allows you to put it into the SD card reader of a laptop or computer. If I woke up in your shoes, I would create a new folder on the laptop's desktop named "SDBackup". Insert the micro-SD card that's now in your phone into the adapter, put it in the computer, and open it to view the files. Open your new folder too. Then hit CTRL+A to select everything on the card and drag it to the Backup folder.

Once the backup is complete, remove your old 2 GB card from the adapter and put the new 16 GB card in it. Then reverse the process: select everything in the Backup folder and drag it to the new card. When that's done, put the new micro-SD card in your phone. You might want to reboot the phone just to make sure it reads everything okay... but afterwards you can archive the old card, wipe it for another purpose, whatever.

And there will be much rejoicing :D

I don't mind if you call me rabbit, for all you know I'm sitting here nibbling on carrots. Am I to understand that this new card will come with the reader? Hope so since I don't have one that I'm aware of. Or should my laptop have it in it somewhere that I know nothing about & have no idea what it looks like therefore no clue what I'm looking for. Archiving & wipe it will have to be for another time. I'm not even getting the card for another month or so. I may need a refresher by then. : )

That specific card was just an example, although I would stay with a brand name for things like memory. This is one place where you DON'T want to chintz out and then have your memory fail (I've had that happen). And yes, almost every micro-SD card sold retail will come with an adapter to insert it into the laptop's SD card reader.

If your laptop doesn't have an SD card reader, all is not lost: there are other ways to do this:

You can connect your phone to the laptop via USB cable and copy everything to your backup folder that way. Then swap out cards in the phone and copy everything back to the new card. It will take some time, depending on how much you have on the old card - but being a 2 GB card, probably not much.

Yet ANOTHER method is - IF you have a reader - put the new card in the reader, connect the phone via cable and just copy from one to another directly. It may be a little faster, but I advise AGAINST this method for one reason: you won't have a backup on your laptop. And that's what I want you to get in the habit of doing... a regular backup schedule of your files to the computer will minimize loss if the card does fail.

If you're not comfortable with the reviews of the SanDisk card I pulled up as an example, find one you like. And this whole conversation will still be here when you're ready, as a refresher :)

Good to know Chief, I ordered it last night, everything has both good & bad reviews & most of the reviews on that card good & bad were regarding the 32 & 64gb card which if I understood you all correctly is a different beast. I should have it in about a month & then I will have to find these posts. What does the card reader look like & I can check now to see if I have it on either my desktop or laptop. Life's a gamble & alot of G-ds help. We'll see if it works when it get here & how long & if it gets to hot.
Thank you everyone & have a gr8 weekend. I will not be back till after the weekend, probably not again today & definitely not tomorrow.
