When I power up a notification saying temperature too high powering off. Phone turns off. How can I fix that or bypass it?

Sounds like you should focus on fixing whatever problem is causing your phone to heat up so much as opposed to trying to bypass it.
You don't want to ignore this message, your phone is shutting itself off as a protective measure. Otherwise you risk just cooking your phone to the point it just fails because of irreparable damage.

Could you provide more details as to what's happening as you're using your phone? Does it heat up frequently or just when you're doing something specific?

Pull the battery and clean the battery contacts on both the phone and the battery with a pencil eraser. Also clear any debris you might find in the battery compartment which may be causing any shorting. Let us know what happens...

If the phone isn't hot, could be a faulty temp sensor. Which would be repair or replacement required. As this is a system function, I'm sure safe mode will not bypass it.

This issue suddenly appeared after I upgraded phones. I removed the sim card and put back the cover. It stayed on my desk for approximately 4 days . I was going to pass it down to my brother then I decided to power it up to make sure it still had a charge then after the metro mobile logo faded out and the main screen came on the message appears 'Temperature too high powering off.'

There are two ... possibly more ... temperature sensors. One is built into the battery to prevent fires and/or explosions during charging or rapid discharges. The other is part of the CPU/GPU heat sink, although I couldn't tell you exactly which chip it is without taking apart the phone. If the sensor is bad in the battery you can replace that, if it's the one on the motherboard ... :(

This is what is reading under battery LGMP260 MODEL
The date is 12/2017
It's from Metro wireless
Apparently this is a LG K20 Plus model, running Android Nougat (7.x). Does that sound right to you?
If so, since you were planning on handing this phone off to your brother the data on it probably isn't an issue as far as accessing it again. Or is that presuming too much? You might want to try doing a Factory Reset to see if that clears up this heating up issue:

You are correct on both fronts. IAM going to factory reset the phone and hopefully for my brother's sake , it does correct the issue. I will post the results shortly .

Well it looks like my brother is SOL.
After the factory reset the phone was initializing then the temperature too high came on and off went the phone. I want to thank you all for the direction and I'm going to open the phone up and hopefully get lucky. Again, thanks everyone.

Of course it still needs to be determined if this is a software or a hardware problem but the ifixit site has a some guides to fix various things (step-by-step instructions with graphics) for your model:
https://www.ifixit.com/Device/LG_K20_PLUS
They don't necessarily have anything to do with what the problem may be, but even just the basic disassembly instructions are a good way to tear-down your phone so you can reassemble it properly again.
