Root LG Upgrade safe for custom ROMs?

Is the LG upgrade possible running a custom ROM e.g. Sense ROM?

Metro offers the details here, but says this is *not* an OS upgrade -- it applies to the phone itself.

You will lose root. It upgrades you to 2.2.2. If you wanted root you'd have to downgrade back

That IS an OS upgrade. Metro are lying sacks of shit. That will update you to the unrootable 2.2.2. If you already have the 2.2.2 update you have to downgrade to 2.2.1 to root. LG updater will NOT work for custom roms.
