Links don't always work

Lurker
Hi all,

I've been having sporadic problems with my Galaxy 10.1 (4G) since I got it. Whenever I press on a link, sometimes it takes multiple presses to get it to go. This happens both in my Gmail app, and on various websites, and was happening before and after I got the TouchWiz update from Samsung. I have v3.2. Any suggestions? Should I do a reboot? How would I do that?

Other than that, I love my g-tab!

Thanks for any help.

Dumb question, but are you sure you're tapping properly? Odd as it sounds, pressing too firmly doesn't work well. I've had to educate some people (generally older people) about how to press a touchscreen on todays smartphones.

If you press too hard, it will flatten out your fingertip and create too large of a contact area. The touchscreen may not pick up the tap and relate it to the link properly if too much of the screen is contacted at once. A light touch usually works better. Also, the tap should be brief so the tap is not confused with a long press which will often open a window for alternate tasks.
Should I do a reboot? How would I do that?
A reboot on a smartphone or tablet is just like a reboot on a computer - power cycle (turn off/on) the device.

Perhaps you meant a factory reset which wipes the tablet clean? This removes all apps, accounts, settings, music, videos, etc., and puts it back into a factory fresh state with the current OS version. So if you do a factory reset with v3.2, but you bought it with v3.01, it will reset with the current v3.2 and run the setup from there. You will have to setup your google account again, reinstall your apps, copy music and videos over, and alter any settings you changed from before. But it will be like new again.

Thanks for your response, and no, it was not a dumb question. As I've encountered this issue, I've been very aware of how I tap the link (a light tap holding just long enough for the link to become highlighted). By the third try I just hold down so I get the option to open in a new window/tab.

And yes, I meant a reboot. I'd rather not have to go through the factory reset. Is a reboot worth a shot (I'm new to Android)?

Thanks so much.

Sure, it doesn't hurt to reboot if you're having issues. You can also try using the Task Manager - long press on the Home icon and it will pop open a utility tool. You can use it to close unused applications running in the background, and a memory option to remove running apps in memory. Neither is usually necessary with Android as it has an excellent memory manager that uses and frees up memory as needed. But if you have a rogue app that doesn't release memory properly, it might help.

As for your tapping issue, something is causing a problem. It might be an app that you installed which is causing the system to become less responsive. An easy test is to reboot the Tab, and if it's back to normal responsiveness, and then slows down after using a certain app, that'll be your answer.

Will give the reboot a try. Thanks for your help.
