Linux Mint question

MikeHoncho

Android Enthusiast
Well, since no one in my IRC channel is active at the moment, I thought I would ask here :D I am about to download mint 13 and I am wondering which download I need, there is something called cinnamon, kde, mate, and xfce. I just need something to use as an android build environment. I had Ubuntu but I kept breaking it and I have heard good things about mint so I thought I would give it a try :p Thanks in advance

Why 13? The latest release is Mint 17. ;)

Cinnamon, KDE, etc are just the different environments. Any of them will work, but I've been using Cinnamon as a daily driver for 6 months or so and it's got everything I need.

I want 13 because it is based off of ubuntu 12.04 which is the only version of ubuntu that I was able to get network drivers working. I tried mint 15 a couple of days ago and was getting 30 kbps download compared to the 15 mbps download I get with 12.04 lol. Linux hates my laptop because it is so old :D Thanks for letting me know :)

No, no, no.... You're looking at it wrong! Unlike windows, Linux LOVES old hardware. It's great for bringing old, slow hardware back to life. :D

So let's look at how to do what you want. First, you should be looking at a current version of Linux, because network issues such as wifi problems are rarely present any more. But since your laptop is old, you probably need a lightweight distribution. I'm partial to Bodhi Linux, which made an old laptop of mine fly like it was brand new! Here are its system requirements:

The minimum requirements to run Bodhi Linux are only: 300+MHz CPU, 128MB RAM, and 2.5GB hard drive space!

If you try Bodhi but still have problems, please let us know. We'll try to help. :)

I chose Cinnamon, just because it seemed behave more like Windows, not that that makes it any better. I can't recall what led me there either, but there I am and I'm done hunting.

If you have some kind of connectivity, then we can fix your throughput issues. I recommend a more modern distribution, whether it is Mint or Bodhi or whatever.

What wifi module do you have?

I don't believe that.
You may be right, but not yet. I've tried about a hundred distros, repartitioned countless times, always gave up and returned to one Ext4 with Mint Cinnamon. Worse yet, I hardly even launch it anymore... just think it's neat to have it at the ready. I'm now more interested in Win9 or whatever they'll call it.

Yeah I'd look at a fast, lean distro for an old machine and Mint is not necessarily the first choice for that imo. Great distro but not super lightweight, though I'm sure it will run fine.

Oh and kde ftw. :p

As much as I hate the windows feel of Cinnamon, I ended up using it lol. No problems at all, yet. Fast install and it came with XChat :D

Specs on my laptop:

AMD E-450 APU with Radeon (tm) HD Graphics 1.65GHz
6GB RAM
500GB hard drive

I plan on either buying a new machine or building my own, now that I found another job. I'm tired of these slow build times haha.
