Linux question

I am a Mac user and really hate Windows. However, I really don't want to spend $1800 on a MBP I will only use on occasion. If I were to buy a Windows based laptop and install something like Ubuntu, I have a question. Will Windows go away and never be seen again? Or is it something like HTC Sense or TouchWiz where its a skin running over the Windows OS?

A laptop (not a tablet) is like a PC, so you can completely erase windows and replace it with ubuntu without any trace.

Linux is no skin. Its a Unix derivative like Mac OS but way better its opensource.

it is it self an OS, just as windows, and mac. So installing Ubuntu you would have the option of completely getting rid of Windows

when it all boils down to it only difference in anything really is just OS. buy a lappy with NO OS and save yourself some $$. better yet, buy one with NO HDD then buy & install your own, its more cost effective. + the usually only install 5400RPM drives anyway.

TBH I don't think you're paying much for Windows bundled on a new PC. I reckon it's got to be something like $30 for Win 7 Home Basic on a new laptop. You're not even getting an OEM DVD most of the time. You just get a sticker with a product key.

I think unless you're buying from niche retailers on the internet, it's probably just about impossible to buy a new PC without Windows pre-installed. Certainly wont find a new PC at Suning, Best Buy or PC World without Windows on it.

Don't like paying extra for Windows...

Since this is an Android forum, it should be noted that Android is a kind of skin running over the Linux OS. Linux is the real deal.

If you try it, tell us :p

I was thinking of installing Chromium on my netbook a while back, but then I realized that without a fast or reliable (or wireless) internet connection - my install would be useless... Though, I do think it looks interesting. It really marginalizes the hardware and focuses on the application and data.

Ive been tempted to try out devices using the Chrome OS, looks pretty interesting how everything is in the "cloud".
It's a real shame that Google has been keeping Chrome OS to itself and hardware vendors only. I think it would make a killer boot CD to use with older PCs.

Recently I worked on an office install that needed nothing but a browser. I didn't have time to fiddle with a Linux from scratch distro to try to roll my own "browser as desktop" disc, and much to my surprise, the only distro that did this was a pay-for deal.

If Google released a Chrome OS boot disc, it should be a win-win.

you can buy new lenovo laptop from ebay for good half price without OS. not only you wont have windows which you are going to erase but also save on the overall price. i remember there were few US guys who are making them out of spare parts that lenovo provides for the service centres and selling them on ebay. i have t400 like that. works the same as any from shop but costed like 60% of regular cheap online shop
