Root List of Removable Crapware

I wanted root mostly to remove all of the AT&T Crapware preinstalled on this phone. After root, I installed Titanium Backup, and I will try to remove all the preinstall apps that I do not need.

Was able to uninstall:
  • YPMobile
  • Vlingo
  • UNO
  • ShopMusic
  • Pops
  • Movies
  • Google+
  • Google Play Movies
  • Google Play Books
  • Emergency Alerts
  • City ID
  • AT&T Social Net
  • AT&T Navigator
  • AT&T Data Balance

Was NOT able to remove:
(Will always most likely be able to backup, but unable to locate APK while attempting to uninstall)
  • Live TV
  • Foursquare
  • Documents to Go
  • Bejeweled
  • Twitter

DO NOT UNINSTALL APP (or uninstall at your own risk):
  • AT&T Software Update (Causes continuous force close on uninstall)

If you would like me to uninstall a preinstalled app that is not listed here, please PM me or reply to this thread. Goodluck! :D

first of all: awesome. thx for this. I already love having root.

second of all: Live TV, Foursquare, Bejeweled, Twitter, Facebook - Would like these to go - but I doubt there's any way to remove these at the moment

EDIT -
Got the "AT&T Smart Wifi" app to uninstall - if anyone else does the same, you may have to restart your phone once it's gone.

Hello,

These are other apps that I would uninstall if it's safe to do so:

AT&T Smart WiFi
Clock
Facebook
Foursquare
GMail
Latitude
Live TV
Maps
Mobile Care
Navigation
News & Weather
Play Music
Google Search
Google Talk
Tasks
Twitter

I know some of them are on the "was not able to remove" list, but perhaps some of the others are OK to uninstall?

Thanks in advance,

Carl

Guide to removing Facebook, Documents To Go,Twitter, Traffic manager (net assistant), my richpad, and Bejeweled 2. When using Titanium Backup you will usually come across "apk not found" when trying to uninstall these apps, so here is how to get around that. First close all the previous listed apps by hitting the settings button and select manage apps, select running and click on each app that is open and press stop (this will eliminate fc and allow you to move the apk) With root explorer navigate to cust/att/us/app and mount r/w. Select each app you wish to install, copy and paste it over to /system/app (mount r/w here as well). Now power off your phone and reboot it. Now go to Titanium backup and uninstall as usual and now they 100% removed. I did not test this on att my email or foursquare because I use them both.

msru8665, thanks for your post. I'm following along, but am not quite there.

I bought and installed Root Explorer, and can navigate the file system as you describe. The copy and paste worked fine. I followed the directions, tried to uninstall Twitter, and got the "apk not found" error.

1) In this line "First close all the previous listed apps by hitting the settings button and select manage apps, select running and click on each app that is open and press stop (this will eliminate fc and allow you to move the apk)" - I can't stop the Twitter app, as the button is greyed out. The best I can do is use Task Manager to "End All" apps. Is that good enough?

2) In this line "With root explorer navigate to cust/att/us/app and mount r/w. Select each app you wish to install, copy and paste it over to /system/app (mount r/w here as well)." - I think you meant "uninstall" instead of "install", right? Also, should it be copy and paste, or should it be the "move" option used on the .apk?

Thanks for your post!

Hi, thanks to msru8665 for giving me the file permissions suggestion, I was able to change the file permission with root browser and uninstall them with root explorer
I uninstalled Foursquare, Documents to Go, Bejeweled, and Twitter so far.

edit: root browser lite -- root uninstaller not root explorer

I installed Root Uninstaller and was able to remove:

Bejeweled
Facebook
Foursquare
Live TV
Twitter

I didn't have to change any permissions on any apps before uninstalling.

I also uninstalled
Mobile Care with it, but it threw up system error messages until I restarted the phone.

I tried to uninstall
AT&T Smart WiFi, but it couldn't uninstall it.

I'm still working on uninstalling these:

Latitude
Navigation
News & Weather
Play Music
Google Talk
Tasks

Any thoughts are welcome.

I also tried the Root App Delete app, but with no success.

I didn't want to buy anything so Root Explorer is out. Root Browser Lite allows you to get in and finally delete Bjeweled, Twitter and FB. I've not found LiveTV or Foursquare.apk though. It's not in the cust/att/us/app area. I didn't need to change any file permissions either. Root Browser was able to delete them. Gonna try to get rid of Email and Traffic Manager (Net Assistant) later. As a side note, I am using this phone on a GoPhone plan so I only connect with wifi. It works great and so far I've done all the prescribed things as instructed, uninstalled the majority of the apps with Titanium and the rest as stated above. The phone still works flawlessly.

carlthulhu did you try titanium backup, the free version worked for me for removing those apps let me know if you have trouble

msru8665, I used Titanium Backup first, and it removed several apps. It couldn't remove the ones that were located in the "cust/att/us/app" folder (Bejeweled, twitter, etc.), but it did remove several in the "system" folder.

These are the remaining apps I'd like to uninstall:

AT&T Smart WiFi
Latitude
Navigation
News & Weather
Play Music
Google Talk
Tasks

Thanks in advance for any tips!

I use total commander (app image is a floppy disk) it works well to find items because it has a search function and it has to "sides" so you can multi-task and find different folders without losing your current folder. I hope this helps you all find the rest of the .apk's that have eluded you so far.

**you can also give total commander root access so it is able to view all of your files and edit them
i just deleted the foursquare.apk file from my phone entirely and i haven't found a trace of it on my phone

carlthulhu do you have a file explorer like astro or root explorer? you need to be able to move the apk's of each app you want to remove from cust/att/us/app to system/app then use titanium backup to uninstall as you usually would. it says cannot find apk now because it only looks in the system/app folder for the apk when it is actually in cust/att/us/app thanks to at&t.

AT&T Smart WiFi Latitude Navigation News & Weather Play Music Google Talk I was able to use Titanium to uninstall these. Is there any way that these could all be moved and deleted by connecting via usb to a computer?

Samweller, I was also able to use Titanium to uninstall:

AT&T Smart WiFi
News & Weather
Play Music
Google Talk

But it couldn't find these to uninstall:
Latitude
Navigation

Any tips on how you found them?

msru8665, I do have Root Explorer, but can't find the .apk for either Latitude or
Navigation. They're not in cust/att/us/app or system/app. Any idea where they are?

Here is a simple and easy solution that worked for me in removing the "bejeweled, rich pad.....)

1) I followed the custom recovery flash steps using fastboot flash, when flashing I used 'recovery.img' from Ascent Y210 instead of 'recovery.super recovery.img'

with that I was able to install cwm 5.02... recovery that worked and rooted.

2) installed 'rootexplorer' app, opened up the root directory with rw permission,
went to /cust/att/us/app folder

3) deleted all the apk's' in there. those are the junk apps that I needed gone. check if you need any thats not free from play store.

4) re booted the phone.

All junk apps that cannot be removed by nobloatware app were gone.

no harm done to other phone functions.
aint that easy? it took me whole night to figure that out tho.

enjoy

But it couldn't find these to uninstall: Latitude Navigation Any tips on how you found them?
@ carlthulhu I just got done looking everywhere through my phone and I don't see them. They're not crossed out in the Titanium list, and I can't find them in any of the app files. I know I had them so I guess I deleted them but don't remember it. You've checked: /system/app /cust/att/us/app /data/app /data/app-private /data/cust/app ? Sorry, I wish I remembered where they were.

I use to file managers, ES File Explorer, and Root Browser. ES File Explorer has a nice interface that's pretty easy to use. And it has a good search function. You might try typing Latitude.apk in the search and let it run? Make sure you're in / and you search 'current path' and I think I used the category 'search runnable apps'. I do things kinda 'seat of the pants' and I don't remember perfectly but I think that might help you find the missing apk's.

somehow i can't remove Live TV app.. can't find that Live TV apk in att/cus folder. Is anyone point me out there plz. thz
