Loading an apk file

I have been sent a beta version of an app by a (reputable) developer, but it has arrived in an email. This means I have a file something.apk on my PC.

I know how to move it onto my Galaxy SII but I don't know what to do with it once it's there.

I know it's a very basic question, but can anyone help please?

Yes but make sure you have "Allow apps from unknown sources" checked in settings first. You'll find it under apps or security depending on your version of android.

sounds sinister but to android your friend is an unknown source.

Just downloaded ES File Explorer and will see what happens.
