Loading same app on two phones

I have two Moto Android x2 phones. I'd like to keep the old phone, complete with loaded applications, as a back up should the new old be lost or damaged. When I try to load old phone (free) apps onto the new phone via my PC, I get the message that the applications are already installed. I can connect both to the Internet via wi-fi, but not through the Verizon network as one has been de-activated. How can I get the Android marketplace to know there are two phones?

When I tried the simpler task of moving the application from one phone to the other by uninstalling from the old phone, turning off the old phone, and reinstalling on the new phone, the application was not installed on the new phone, and the app appeared on the old phone when it was turned back on.

If you are using the same Google account on the new phone, and have the same Service Provider, your apps should all be in the Google Play Store ready to be installed on the new phone.
