Help Lock Screen advice

Yeah you go to settings > security > screen lock > pattern and then after that you get some options regarding timing

Unless I'm also totally lost, the default lock screen doesn't have what the OP is asking for.

On the iPhone it works like this:

- You set a password lock, but you define if you want the phone to ask for the password every time you turn the screen off or lets say you set it to ask only after 5 minutes
- You turn of the screen - and it lock (power button always does it)
- You turn the screen on before the 5 minutes, you just swipe to unlock. After 5 minutes it asks for the password

On my S3 I can't configure it the same way, and I want to know if there is some way to do that, like installing another lock screen or app.

ON the S3 (or every android, I don't know) there is like two ways:

A) You can set the Power button to no lock the screen and set a time (like 5 minutes) to lock the screen after that time.

Problem: with the S3 home physic button, if you put your phone in your pocket (before the auto-lock time) there is a high chance that it will press the home button and your screen will be turned on, so it will be unlocked and will press many apps / options or even make a call.

B) You set the power button to lock the screen every time, and set the auto-time to like 5 minutes.

Problem: if you have PIN/path/password enabled, it WILL ask for it every time you turn on the screen.

What it should be: the existed "Lock Automatically time" options should actually be "Ask for secure lock time" (or a new option inside "secure lock")
This way, you can always lock your screen when turning it off (power, auto) but if lets say you turn it on after 30 seconds and your "ask for secure lock" time is 5 minutes, you will only be presented with the normal swipe unlock.

For me this is so obvious I can't even understand how it doesn't work that way.
Maybe because some Android phones doesn't have the physic home button - so it will not be miss pressed on the pocket.

That is EXACTLY what I was getting at. You've put it so much better than I could!

After digging around the internet a little more it seems that this is the default behavior on android.

It is a really "break-down" for anyone used to secure lock screen on iOS coming to android.

I did found a way to at least make it less annoying when you are at trusted places: Unlock with Wi-fi

I hope Google one day change this on Android to a much more correct and usable way.

Is it me but do people find themselves actually opening apps or operating the phone while in a pocket? When the phone is in your pocket, while you might hit the home button, it seems the actual chance of running an app or dialing someone would be remote because you'd have to first of all have the phone screen facing your leg - and then the conductivity from your leg through the pant pocket needs to "swipe" to get to the home screen. The button is almost flush with the screen, which seems to make it even harder to do.

Option B seems to be the right choice. Yes, you will be prompted to enter your pswd/etc. when you press the power on/off button to turn off the screen - and actually I like that option to immediately lock the phone as opposed to not (by letting it go off by itself).

Edit: I just tried to do the same on my iPhone and yes, the amount of time to lock with the passcode is absolute - so you don't have that option to activate the passcode immediately if you've set it to require after, say 5 mins. I guess it depends on what works best for the user. I really like the additional flexibility on my S3.

No. If you have swipe + PIN (we are talking about ppl who wants to have PIN/path, not just swipe) and you chose to not lock the phone right after turning it off, when u press home button you are already at the home screen.

Or if you chose to lock it after turning it off, it will ask for the swipe AND the PIN/path.

The problem with the Android is that he actually allow you to have only PIN/patch or only swipe, but the "lock" stuff works all together.

They need to split it, so you can have the screen to be locked (so it asks for swipe) right after turning the screen off but ask for a PIN/patch after a determined period of time.

PS: on iPhone you always "lock" the screen when turning it off with the power button. IF you also use the Passcode Lock option, you can define "require password" to be Immediately, 1 minute, 5, 15 or 1 hour.

So actually, the better flexibility is still on the iOS, because you can define "lock time" and "require passcode time" separately.
