Root Lock screen problems WITHOUT a case

Lurker
The problem occurs at the home screen. I'll swipe to unlock the device, the screen goes blank, and then the lock screen pops up again as if I woke up the device using the power button. It will continue to cycle back to lock screen as I swipe over and over until I hold down all three buttons and restart the device. Sometimes this works and I can log in; other times, I'm right back where I was. But almost always after a successful start and swipe, the screen will go blank after using the device for a little while and then goes into its cycle.

I'm running 4.3 and am rooted. I have another Nexus 7 (2012) that is also running 4.3 and is rooted and has not had any problems at all. I have read MANY boards of people with similar issues, but mine is a little bit different. I do have the Poetic magnetic case, but the tablet hasn't been in there after reading that was the problem. So no magnet interference. Also, I turned off the Auto Brightness and still had the problem. Unlike many others, I do not have the charging or waking problems that a lot of people experienced, and I popped off the back cover and all of the connections (battery, lcd + digitizer, power and volume buttons) are secure. I performed a factory reset and even swapped batteries with my original tablet and the problem remained. I'm at such a loss.

Has anyone else had this problem and been able to resolve it??? I bought this tablet on Craigslist for my girlfriend, so there is no chance of returning it to the store.

I would make a full nandroid backup with TWRP, using a jump drive with TWRP to write the backup directly to it as they can be difficult to move off the internal memory after.

Use Titanium backup to make backups of games and related game data. Make sure you go into TB's preferences and enable "backup app external data" to "always". Many people miss this step and then lose some game saves or states.

Either move the TB folder off the tablet or have TB upload it a cloud provider.

Trigger SuperSU's full unroot feature, Using Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit restore it to full Locked n Stock 4.2.2, test the tablet.

If all seems well root it, re install your Titanium backups and test again for a bit.

If that all works you can either stay at 4.2.2 or reload your 4.3 nandroid backup which will take you right back to the moment you created it.

Test again for a bit.

If the issue arises on stock than contact Asus and see what they will do for you, I understand they are very easy going and may swap it out for you. Generally speaking their policy is they will service any device with a locked bootloader but that can be bent at times. Just restore it to stock n locked before sending it in.

If its fine on stock but returns to weirdness on root or what not than you will have to try and see if there is something that is triggering it.

Did you buy the tablet rooted? Did you reflash stock image and kernel if it was? Did you apply the 4.3 update yourself or did it have it on it?

Any of the above questions may help to decide where you should go next.
