Locked Galaxy S7

Hi,

I am getting a message on my Galaxy S7 asking for a password but don't know what the password is. 

The message is:

'Your phone was restarted and needs to be unlocked using your password. You can use your fingerprints next time you unlock your phone. Your password must contain at least 4 characters including at least one letter.'

My Google account password doesn't work and it says it should be minimum 4 digits plus a letter. Phone won't turn off either, can restart it but not turn off. Will be happy to factory restore it as wanted to use new sim card in it anyway. 

Any ideas??

Hello.

What security did you have on the screen before this happened? Was it Swipe only, or None, so someone could have locked it on you.

Have you had the S7 from new?

Would you be able to log in to your Samsung account on a browser if you had set up a Samsung account?

Yeah had the phone from new. Only thing is I'm in Greece at the moment don't know if that makes any difference.

Not sure if I have a Samsung account will try to recover it on another device, just assumed it was Google.

Yeah I have a new sim card I was planning on swapping after my EE contract finishes soon.

I'm not totally clear on your situation, however the advantage with Samsung's Find My Phone is that setting a new lock will work for most people, where Google's Android Device Manager / Find My Device (or whatever they changed it to) has not encouraged that function for quite a while.

It may have been active in the phone's Security settings by default, or I think it's possible to still set up a Samsung account without access to the phone, but I'm not sure. It's been 2 years + since I had a Samsung and maybe a current owner could help you better.

I was able to recover my old Samsung account with help from their website or the link above. Check the helpful FAQ section.

As long as it has a data connection it should work, so having a different sim should be alright, though it is in a different world region.

Of course, you can Factory Reset it in Recovery Mode (powered off, using the buttons) where you will lose any data you had not backed up, just that obviously it becomes a brick if you don't have your original Google account (not Samsung) to log back in due to Google's Factory Reset Protection. Again here Google's own account recovery section makes it easy to get this back, but I think you said you have it.

Could this have been caused by adding a new sim to a Locked? EE device? I don't know.

It's 6 hours since you posted so you probably have thrown it in the Med or written a book by now on how to do it

Hi, thanks will try what you have suggested.

Haha not quite in the med yet. We are back home from holiday tomorrow night so decided to leave it till we're home.

And new sim hasn't gone in yet, started with a message saying hadn't used my phone for over 24 hours so had to use the password but my google password didn't work so it locked me out.

I simply meant had a new sim ready to start using so didn't mind if I had to do a factory settings restore on the phone and start a fresh.

Ah OK. I hope you can get it sorted.

Ultimately, you could have done with someone who actually remembered seeing that particular pop up message you had, and knew what it meant.

I'm new here myself, but I guess you could always also try the S7 device forum here on AndroidForums if you are twiddling your thumbs.
