Help Locked out of my handset (LG Optimus)

my lg optimus has locked me out and i can't remember the gmail
what can i do without restoring the factory settings

If you are talking about a screen lock password, then after a fixed number of incorrect entries your phone should prompt you for the password for the gmail account the phone is registered to. If that doesn't work, shut off the phone, log into the gmail account on a website and change the password using Google's password recovery https://www.google.com/accounts/recovery?gaps. Once the new password is confirmed, turn on the phone and try using the new password.

If you have locked yourself out of the phone, follow Rush's advice. Be advised that a password reset will only work if data was enabled on the phone before it was locked, either by wifi or 3g. If not, then a hard reset is your only option.

It should be the gmail account that the phone is registered to. If you can't remember either that or the password, hard reset is your only option.
