Help locked out to many failed attempts

Hi my son has the tablet and is at boarding school the boys tried to break into his tablet and now he cannot get in at all - he was using the pattern password. He says that when he turns it on he is asked for google info but when he puts gmail address and password its wrong which its not. How can he fix this please. We are in New Zealand if that helps. many thanks.
I believe he tried to push the button at the bottom but didnt work.

If it's not accepting the Google info, then you'd have to factory reset the device - this would wipe all data & apps, but you would be able to re-download any apps once you set back up.

Thanks are you sure this will be ok? as I read somewhere else that this makes the system unstable and just want to be sure we do the right thing - Im guessing factory reset is the little button at the bottom which he did push in are you meant to hold something down or anything?

I doens't make it unstable, in fact it will run smoother after the factory reset.
