Locking contacts search on a string

Android 2.2 on LG P-500

IF

  • I have wi-fi keyboard active as the input method,
  • I open the stock contacts app and DON'T tap on the sarch string input field, so it doesn't get the focus yet
  • type anything through the desktop computer keyboard => wi-fi keyboard => phone

THEN

part of what I type appears in the search string input field, the input field itself appears in evidence, lit orange book aside, I complete the string typing on the desktop computer keyboard, AND most interesting:

I can tap into each contact and go into it, see the info and come back with the back button on the phone and the seach string is still there and the results too, I don't have to retype my search.

I DO I DO IT WITHOUT NEED OF WI-FI KEYBOARD AND THE CONNECTION FROM THE DESKTOP?

I think that's normal? That's normal behavior on my phone.

Not on mine alas.

Sorry, I mistyped, the question is

HOW DO I DO IT WITHOUT NEED OF WI-FI KEYBOARD AND THE CONNECTION FROMTHE DESKTOP?

If I use the LG or Android keyboard, I have to tap and activate the input field for the keyboard to appear => other behaviour: if I tap to open one of the contacts resulting from the search, when I press the BACK button I don't have the string+results any more.
