Help Long delay between power button and lock screen

Hi all, A couple of days ago, I noticed that there was a delay of up to six or seven seconds between when I press the power button and when the lock screen comes up. This is when the phone is already on, and has (seemingly) gone into deep sleep--although it's diving into deep sleep very quickly considering that I've gone as little as three or four seconds between locking the phone via power off and trying to bring it back up.

I figured it was app-related, so I started by wiping off smsBlocker (which I'd recently downloaded), Lookout, JuiceDefender Ultimate and Opera Mobile. No dice. This morning, I went into Recovery mode and told it to wipe the cache which it's, um, still doing. I'm stuck at the droid character and the exclamation point screen over 40 minutes after telling it to wipe the cache partition. I can't access the advanced tab to wipe the dalvik.

I'm on the stock rom, not rooted, with an OtterBox Defender case (although battery temp has never been an issue for me). I really don't want to do a factory reset, but I'm beginning to think that may end up being my only remaining option in the not-too-distant future. So, two questions then:

1. Has anyone successfully stopped the power-to-lock screen lag I'm encountering? If so, how?

2. Should I be very, very concerned that my month-and-a-half old phone (just outside the return window and without a replacement plan, as the store wanted $130-250 up front) seems to be stuck wiping its cache?

Quick update, I wiped the cache partition successfully and rebooted the phone, but it's still taking 3-5 seconds to load. Is there any way to access and wipe the dalvik on a non-rooted stock rom, or am I approaching this from the wrong angle in the first place?

Mine did this and it ended up being the SD card I was using. Try pulling the SD card and see if that speeds things up.

Go figure I'm 1000 miles from home with no micro SD case or adapter to put it in. I'll have to try that late this week when I get back. AT&T tech support was largely useless, and I really don't want to wipe my phone over a five-second delay.

Finally got sick of it, and my 16GB micro SD is now in a sandwich baggie. Luckily, I haven't needed it. When I get home, I'll try reformatting it--don't know that I ever did after moving it over from my old Captivate.

For the record, the problem is solved. Thanks for the help, Redraider!
