Help Longish newbie post- Mission Impossible Emergency calls only mode Sony Xperia J

Hi all,

I tried my operator and sony support but had no success, my chance of
unlocking my phone with data loss is less than finding life on Mars.

I am in the UK, with a 3G network operator. I have a Sony Xperia J.
The sim card is about 8 years old, the phone is from January 2013.

When I first got the phone, it worked fine even without a sim card
as I use the phone mainly as a small tablet. Recently I transfered the
sim card from my old phone to the android to get myself in the
modern age. All OK so far except the usual problem with the Xperia J
with the screen being too sensitive.

Today I decided to add some security to it, namely a pin number. I
chose a 4 digits pin (rather than longer pin or pattern). Whilst
I was in the security menu I stupidly ventured into the "Lock Sim"
menu and my sim is locked, asking me to enter the PUK code.
Alerting me there are only ten attempts, I looked in for empty
phone box and cannot find it, phoned my operator and gave me the
PUK code.

I entered the PUK code and it was fine, as it was my first attempt.
Then I entered the pin, which was fine. But since then the phone
is in the emergency calls mode only as I am sure most of you know
what I meant. If I use my other phone to phone the xperia the phone
menu comes out and I can talk. But if it is a text there is only
a beep and a symbol top of the screen (alongside a wifi symbol and
a couple of others). The sim card still works, I tried it on the other
pre-smartphones phones. I also have another sim card from the
same operator but it will not work (expectedly) on the xperia J
because I was told the xperia J will only work with the old sim
card which is tied to my phone contract. Things are a bit more
relaxed in the older days with my older pre-smartphone phones.

To complicate matters there is a lot of data on my phone mainly
sms that I really do not want to get rid of with a hard reset or
a software update. I am running on ICS 4.04 I think, there has
been a couple of alerts telling me JellyBean is ready but I
made no attempts to upgrade. My phone is not USB debugging
mode enabled so i cannot use somewhere like mobileGo from
Wonderware(?) or any software which can backup a smartphone
and backup the texts. I downloaded the Sony pc companion 2.1
but found out like other people that 2.1 does not have the backup
and restore option anymore. And the Sony support guy makes
a relevant but different point that Experia J does not have this
option. Other people with other models have the same problem
as me. I read that the sony software update sometimes will
do a backup of the phone before upgrading but I wouldn't risk it
after being told by support guy. In fact I went as far as I could
with the upgrading thing without the upgrading
and it did have warning saying all data would be lost.

My phone is not bricked or anything and it is brand new.
What shocked me is that I did not freeze the phone with
3 failed pin attempts or 10 failed PUK attempts, I remember
them right or chose not to enter the PUK code and waste any
attempts. I also tried the famous *#*#xxxxxx# thing but no good.
Someone suggested the old PC suite from sony and I downloaded it
but still no good. I also downloaded the old pc companion in case
it has the restore and backup option but it has not, seems to be
an option it downloads after installation, like some options are in the
latest version(and it probably needs the USB debugging enable)

Is this Mission Impossible? I don't mind hard resetting it or software
resetting it to get it work but first I need to get those sms from
the phone. It's very important and I am sorry that I did not back it
up earlier.

Thanks for your help and reading this, I apologize for the long mail.

Lots of chaps around here have had success with SMS Backup & Restore this will backup your sms to the external SDCARD of your phone and allow you to do the factory reset and reinstall the sms backup program to restore on the phone

Hi thanks for your advice. My post was long as I want to be give complete details rather than just a too-brief "My phone is stuck ..." and then people cannot help.

I missed out on saying that the No Service-Emergency Mode I am in, I have no accessto any of the menus, pressing any of the home/menu/back button doesn't help. When I call myself on the other phone, the screen works ok such as giving me a choice to reject the calls, so you get a bit more functions than just a dial pad when an incoming call comes in. So that's why I cannot enable usb debugging or download any app- someone very senior in sony may know some master code to do it or some sonyHQ-only software/hardware to do it.

Unfortunately whilst I have been with Sony for 8 years I am sad to say that there is no secret master code to remove this. The only way to get this lock of the phone is to reflash which will remove the data and when it is locked like this you can even backup using our software. I understand this is rather inconvenient in your circumstance but I can assure you it is for privacy reasons.

Hi Sam,

I am very grateful for your help. Since i posted the thread there
has been a couple of minor developments.

I tried to access the fastboot mode, but after many attempts just
cannot even get close. But accessing the flash mode with the usb
lead works (and also the safe mode). I wonder whether for
this batch of Xperia J there are tighter controls on fastboot mode
and in particular on the famous 7378423 thing which means they
are not available to the general public, can be a combination of
Sony/Three.

Also I read I might not have been able to access the 7378423
because the phone has been rooted to start off with by the
previous owner (despite my phone supposed to be new) and
custom rom does not have the sony service menu so I was told.
In that case I would have to try various methods to start the
phone in the recovery mode, but without knowing which rom
and cannot do it with usb since debugging mode is not enabled.

It's just very upsetting that the phone is in this bad shape
and I didn't try to root it or anything which there was a big risk.
I didn't enter the pin wrong three times or PUk code wrong at all.
All I did wrong was put a sim lock on my phone/card and also
was not more careful about it/backup/usb debugging.

Finally, may I ask you one more thing, i am sorry about this. Did
you mean to say that the Sony software can't backup the data
if I put the software in again, rather than 'can' backup?

Regards
