Root Looking for a way to uninstall unwanted apps on my HTC EVO

Enterprise IT person hoping to get info on how to manage my Android phone better...and hoping that newer phones will have more flexibility in unloading the stuff I know I will never use! I know a little about LINUX on servers but not enough I think to root my phone...
