Today, I opened a website that was displaying some PPC ads and this file (a6mv421.apk) started downloading automatically. No matter how much I tried I could not stop it from downloading - even after I turned off data connection on my zenfone (running android 4.4.2) and deleted the partially downloaded file, it started the download as soon as I turned by phone back on. This file is listed as a 'static malware' here - http://apkscan.nviso.be/report/show/1885ac30b0528a8411405e1c8e2d1f21. I finally had to factory-reset my phone.

My question is -

1. how can we stop automatic downloads such as this one? ("Allow installation of Apps from unknown sources" is unchecked in my phone). I used the default android browser.

2. Is my phone safe after the factory reset?

3. Could I have avoided this if I had probably used a different browser?

Thanks in advance for your responses!

If Unknown sources is unchecked then it shouldn't be able to uninstall even though it's downloaded (even if it is checked you have to give permission for it to install).
Yeah you should be fine after a factory reset.
Hopefully someone else will answer the rest :thumbsupdroid:

Don't think it was the browser as much as the site you visited, as with the PC, but I'd love to hear other opinions on that. As Funky pointed out though, if Unknown sources is unchecked then it shouldn't be able to install itself, so you should be okay although this can all be unnerving for sure!
