Looking for somthing

About the only thing you can do without root is a factory reset. Factory reset on any phone will makes it snappy as the day you first used it. Of course you lose ALL your settings, apps, widgets, etc. The more apps and widgets you add back to the phone increases the chance the phone will not be as snappy anymore. Only adding apps you absolutely need will prolong that 'new phone' peppiness. As with most things in life, it's a tradeoff.

With root, you can install new ROMs (operating system) that have been tweaked to remove many of the slowdowns the original OS has. Many ROMs allow overclocking the CPU speed for performance, or even underclocking for extended battery life. With root, you can backup your entire phone, so if there is an issue, your safe. If you don't like one ROM, just install another. If you don't like it as much as you thought, just restore a backup to go back to a previous ROM (with all your apps, settings, mail, etc. exactly as it was when you backed it up). There's a LOT of flexibility in rooting.

On the UI side. you can go into Developer Options and lower the animation scalings to speed the UI up but universally, if you mean punch as in performance, yeah itl need a lighter OS and/or a modified kernel, both requiring you to "hack" the phone

A rom is a phone operating system. Like windows, lynux etc on a PC. Just now youre using samsungs rom built from google android and its called Touchwiz. If you root your phone you can put a custom rom on it made by a 3rd party developer (programmer).
on the s3 you could put a custom rom on thats based on touchwiz or an AOSP rom thats based on pure google android.
The touchwiz roms are very stable and have great battery life. The aosp roms are very lightweight, smoother, faster, themeable so you can change the whole look of the phone but youll lose the samsung features like multi-window, s-voice etc

You can also change the kernel to one that can make the phone's processor run faster giving better performance (causes more heat and battery loss)

Great description mate should help a few along the way.
Also how you finding Illusion 4.3 Battery usage? Been toying with the idea of dual booting to have a look but am firm believer in 'if it aint broke, don't fix' I'm using Jelly Bam V10 4.3 and really can't fault it! But then again might be missing out on something better lol!

Lol yeah illusion is great EXCEPT battery life on the i9300. Its still in alpha though so hopefully the beta will fix it. If battery life is important id recommeod their 4.2 build illusion 2.1beta. Its perfect in every way. Best rom ive ever used :)
Oh yeah if youre gona use siyah kernel for the dual booting i wouldnt bother mate. The illusion kernel is half of what makes it good imo and i found googy max (siyah based) very buggy with illusion

Thank you guys that's help me quite a lot and I now have a better understanding about ROM if I do any of this to my phone its a shame I'll lose multi window as i always use that feature

Yeah its a feaure i used too. If you just root the phone, without even using a custom rom, you can add any app to multiwindow so its much more useful
If you use a touchwiz based rom youll keep multiwindow.
Another thing you lose with a aosp rom is HDMI output for plugging the phone into a tv :(
So theres ups and downs

Thanks for the info fella I'll stay where I am at the moment as battery is very important to me, battery on JBam very good.
Also I hear on the grapevine that another version is coming very very soon as CM have now fixed nearly all the bugs on 10.2.
On the battery front I assume your using Greenify from store? If not give it a whirl, free and does exactly what it says on the box brilliant app.

Thanks man. Yeah i have greenify but havent really experimented with it tbh. Ill give it another pop
Are you having the problem where on ad-supported apps the screen is dodgy and goes black? Aparently CM have fixed it so im hopin it filters down to the cm-based roms soon
