Help Looking for timer app

zuben el genub

Extreme Android User
Is there a decent timer app that would shut off a tablet screen and all at a set time?

I've got a decent wifi timer, but I need to shut the screen off, too.

Thanks

if you don't want to write the damn program, as you will with Tasker, use MacroDroid.

it is a Point and Click macro manager that can do 99% of everything you want, and without all the hassle of trying to figure out how to make Tasker work. Money wasted in my opinion. I don't have the time or patience for that app.

now, all that said, Tasker geeks can make it sit up and shine, but for the rest of us, it is simply a geek's toy to play with.

Wow.

If you would like to try Tasker there ate many people who would be glad to help. You start out simple and nibble aw3ay at it.

I am of the opinion that Tasker is the app that saved Android.

I have no interest in Tasker anymore, I have yet to find anything that needs to be done, that MacroDroid cannot do just by using their selection menus.

That is really great that you found an app that totally meets your needs. A number of people like it and find it easier to use then Tasker.

A couple of questions (not being a MacroDroid user) ...

I assume you cannot create an APK from a MacroDroiddefinition so anyone who uses the definition must have MacroDroid installed on their device. There is a Tasker App Factory that creates APKs from Tasker definitions and they can be run on any device without installing Tasker.

Having a non-MacroDroid APK invoke a MacroDroid definition is (I assume) not possible.

In short. MacroDroid seems great for people who don't want to get too involved. Tasker seems great for people who want to get more involved but don't want to jump into Java development.

For the original question it seems likely that eith MacroDroid or Tasker can provide a solution.

Where's a good write up and review of Tasker? I don't take the blurbs from any app in Play Store seriously unless I know the app.
Even if I decide not to use it, it's only fair to look at the reviews and writeups first.

@Thom ( using you post direct with added comments )

That is really great that you found an app that totally meets your needs. A number of people like it and find it easier to use then Tasker. I only offer it as an easy way to solve most problems that need a macro. It is NOT for everyone.

Totally true.

Correct

yes, either will solve the OP's wishes.
MacroDroid can do that in about 1 minute if you are experienced with MD. It will take about 5 minutes if you are new to using MD. Contrast this to the much needed time/experience to even get Tasker to say "Hello World" ( a favorite programmer's first lesson regardless of computer language )

It uses a Menu System to allow you to find the Trigger needed, and then a 2nd Menu to let you set the desired effect that trigger causes.

It will also let you assign a constraint to prevent that macro from running under certain conditions, or to restrain that macro to running only after another event occurs.... I rarely use the constraints though, they are not normally needed.

IMO, the guy or team who wrote MacroDroid are genius(es)...
They gave the average joe off the street the power to make Android do what we want it to.

I looked at both. The problem I have is the wifi timer turns off MLB when it's supposed to. Whatever was on the screen, stays on the screen in all brightness. Play of the game, batter, whatever. I don't want screen burn. I'll wake up a 1:30A and the tablet is still on with a picture of so and so at bat. The wifi is off, so MLB can't run. I need to shut the screen off.

All the other apps shut off and tablet will shut screen off, but not MLB.

If I play solitaire and fall asleep, the tablet turns off.

I am going to offer up a MacroDroid solution to killing MLB.

You just said that the WiFi timer turns off MLB, but it is staying "on screen" but the tablet is NOT turning 'OFF', am I correct?

Try this sequence and let me know if it works for you.

Trigger: WiFi disabled
Action: Kill Background App
Select: MLB
Action:
Select: Screen OFF

NOTE: when you select Screen OFF, MacroDroid is going to ask you to allow it to be a Device Administrator. You must answer 'yes' or it won't work.

.
You should be able to test this quickly by manually turning off WiFi and watching to see what happens next, or just moving out of range of the WiFi and see what happens.

I am using an un-root-ed Droid Turbo 2 and Marshmallow. I have not been able to Kill Application or Kill Background Application under either Tasker or MacroDroid.

Are you root-ed? What version of Android?

... Thom

I'm not rooted. Since I can get rid of 99% of the crap without rooting, I haven't bothered.
I have a Moto XPRE running 6.0. That version came with the phone.

I have worried about the Droid name in the app. Anything named Droid seems to work only on Verizon Phones. I have a Verizon number ported to T-Mobile. I want no part of Verizon.

Ummm, MacroDroid has nothing to do with Verizon, it has everything to do with anDroid.... :)

do NOT confuse hardware models with software applications.... Android was around long before the Motorola Droids were invented/named.

Works great in 5.1.1 and backwards, with Marshmallow you have to give MacroDroid Administrative permission to do what it needs to do..

Tablet is an Acer running 5.1.

Verizon did try to patent droid for itself. I seem to remember a squabble about the word droid with another phone ad during the Super Bowl. Verizon got slapped down, but they had "droid does" and pushed it so often that some, including me, think that anything with the word droid belongs to Verizon.

Okay, I've copied most your instructions.

I have one question, can you override? I'm a confirmed insomniac and sometimes will play solitaire which will turn off the screen if you go to sleep. It doesn't need wifi on.

In MacroDroid, open "List Macros"

scroll down to the one that you named for MLB, on the right side of the screen is a Toggle Switch.
You can tap that to turn the macro on/off as you need it.

I have to do that for a lot of the macros that I have. some of them are very unique....
ie, I was on a trip last month and had a room partner splitting the cost of our hotel rooms. He was a "light sleeper" and having any noises occur in the middle of the night was bad.... So, I wrote a macro to "stop all notifications"... it worked like a champ, I just had to remember to turn it off when we woke up, or the phone would not even ring when I got a call. :)

I now use a slightly different mode to accomplish that here at home, I have gone into the Settings and just simply set up a "Do Not Disturb" schedule for 00:01 - 06:00
I am a moderator for a motorcycle forum and as forums are a 24 hour time zone :), I would get notifications about different things in the middle of the night.... Now, I don't.... I sleep right thru all the petty crap that people complain about :D

I have a buddy who is more simplistic. He just turns the damn phone off until he gets out of bed;)
